PORTLAND – Bishop Richard J. Malone underwent emergency gall bladder surgery Sunday at Mercy Hospital, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland announced Monday.

Malone, 60, was “recovering well and recuperating at home,” spokeswoman Sue Bernard said in a press release issued late Monday afternoon.

The bishop’s public appearances were canceled for the rest of the week. His workload for the rest of the month is expected to be evaluated later this week, she said.

Malone was installed as Maine’s 11th bishop two years ago.
