Hockey isn’t over yet

The NHL and AHL playoffs have been going on for more than a month now. I subscribe to and read the BDN paper every day and I have noticed that you don’t have any news of the hockey playoffs on the sports headline page or much in the back pages since the Maine Black Bears’ NCAA Frozen Four. Did you know that the Portland Pirates are now in the Eastern Conference series championships, and the Mighty Ducks are in NHL Western Conference series championships? (The Pirates are the farm team of the Mighty Ducks.)

C’mon now, just because the Maine Black Bears hockey season is over does not mean the rest of hockey is over. There is more than just baseball in the sports world now. How about some equal press to the hockey fans, especially to the fans of the Portland Pirates and the NHL in general. After all, we all will be watching baseball very soon.

Having fun with fol

I am 12 years old and this will be my fifth year participating in the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf program. Each year the program has grown with more girls joining us. I have met a lot of new friends and had a lot of fun.

I am learning the basics of golf and had the opportunity to visit different courses. We have even gone to see the Ladies State championship tournament in Camden. I was glad to see the article in the paper so other girls can learn about the program. Thea Davis and Cathy Willey have worked hard to keep the program going.

I want to thank Martha White, Peggy Buchanan, Karen Feeney, and Cheryl Paulson for volunteering their time to this program and helping us learn the game of golf. I also want to thank Hermon Meadow Golf Course for letting us visit and play on their course.
