Fire in Alton gravel pit prompts state fire marshal’s investigation

An investigator with the State Fire Marshal’s Office was in Alton Monday looking into the cause of fires that burned excavating equipment in a gravel pit.

The burned equipment was found Monday morning by the owner, although Sgt. Tim York of the State Fire Marshal’s Office said Monday afternoon that it wasn’t clear when the fires began, just that the excavators were no longer burning by the time they were discovered.

“When the owner of the equipment found them, the fires were out,” York said.

One or more burglars broke into Roger’s Market in Hudson sometime during the weekend and took money and an unspecified amount of items from the store.

The value of the stolen items was still being assessed, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Doug Smith said Monday.

The break-in happened sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning.

It was discovered when a store employee opened up the market, located at the intersection of Routes 43 and 221. Investigators will be reviewing surveillance camera footage and following up on leads, Smith said.

A Bangor woman reported the theft of $46 worth of office supplies from her desk at a local attorney’s office last Wednesday.

After returning from a meeting, the woman, 28, noticed two silver ink pens, a Webster’s Dictionary, a liquid correction pen and a letter opener were missing, according to police reports.

She also said the contents of her purse were out of place and was worried about identity theft.

Police have no suspects.
