CARIBOU – One of two men Caribou police were seeking for forgery and theft turned himself in on Wednesday morning.
Wednesday afternoon, Joshua Virtanen, 18, was being held on charges. He was transferred to the Aroostook County Jail during the afternoon. If he could not make bail by Thursday, he was expected to make an initial appearance. Otherwise, his court appearance was scheduled for June 22 in District Court at Caribou.
Police were still looking for Douglas Ouellette, 20, of Connor who was believed to have been Virtanen’s accomplice.
Police were searching for the two men since last Thursday. They were sought in connection with the forging and cashing of checks from a personal checking account of a family member.
Caribou police Officer Kevin St. Peter said the two allegedly acquired personal checks, filled them out, signed them and cashed them. Police would only say that thousands of dollars are involved in the check-cashing scheme.
Police were alerted last week by a Caribou financial institution that the two men may be cashing stolen checks. Police and family members alerted the owner of the checks.
St. Peter said the two are already known to police in other situations.
Anyone with information on Ouellette can contact the Caribou Police Department at 493-3301.
