University of Maine alumnus and Fox Sports Net New England sportscaster Gary Tanguay is going Hollywood.
A few months after landing a supporting acting role in “Stiffs,” a black comedy following the plight of a proud Italian-American hearse driver, Rumford native Tanguay just finished filming another movie role.
Tanguay, who plays an investigative reporter in Stiffs, which stars Danny Aiello, plays a reporter as well in “Gone, Baby, Gone,” a drama directed by Ben Affleck and adapted from a Dennis Lehane novel.
“It’s kind of a minor role, but it’s nice to have my name out there and be able to do a couple of movies,” said Tanguay, who said his role in “Stiffs” directly led to this latest screen credit. “I know a few casting agents and people told me about it.”
Tanguay said “Gone, Baby, Gone” is slated to be released in late summer or fall next year.
An intriguing side note to Tanguay’s association with “Stiffs” was a promotion involving a benefit auction for a walk-on part in the movie. The auction, whose proceeds went to the Salvation Army’s Good Neighbor Energy Fund, was won by Massachusetts native Jerry Aiello, who bid $5,001 for the role.
“I think he just wanted to get together with Danny and talk about the family tree,” Tanguay joked.
“Actually, they aren’t related,” said FSSNE marketing and communications manager Skip Perham. “It was funny though, because the story is Danny Aiello was in a Boston-based movie in the 80’s called ‘Once Around’ and when he was filming it, people would ask him if he was related to Jerry because Jerry was involved in a well-known super market chain.”
Danny Aiello finally started asking who this Jerry guy was and the two finally got to meet 25 years later.
