Merrill, MDI upset George Stevens

BLUE HILL – Sam Merrill pitched a three-hit shutout and hit an RBI single in the top of the third inning to give him the only run he needed as the Mount Desert Island Trojans pulled a major upset, 1-0 over the George Stevens Academy Eagles in high school baseball action Thursday.

Shea singled three times for the Trojans.

Sam Bridges, Lance Gale and Lucas Marks each singled for the Eagles.

At Dyer Brook, run-scoring doubles by Rusty Toothaker and Adam Anderson and Zach Stubbs’ RBI single sparked a four-run second inning that broke the game open.

Anderson drove in five runs with a three-run single, double, and sacrifice fly. Jeremy Boutilier tripled and doubled and knocked in a run, and Toothaker also had a single.

Toothaker went five innings for the win, allowing six hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Ricky Parks doubled and singled for East Grand of Danforth, and Sean Stevenson had a run-scoring triple.

At Lee, Tyler Thompson knocked a three-run home run and an RBI single, and T.J. Braley added a two-run home run as Lee cruised past Calais.

Kris King hit a triple, two singles and drove in a run, and B.J. Crocker and Charlie Boulrisse each singled twice for the Pandas.

Scott Geel notched an RBI single and Keegan McCormick doubled for the Blue Devils.

At Jonesport, Steven Newell had an RBI double and RBI single as the Dragons held off the Royals.

Craig Moody knocked three singles and Ryan Bosch had a double and a single for Woodland.

Peter Barton had an RBI single and three-run double to lead the Royals while Charlie Chandler hit a two-run single and Ryan Geel a double and two singles.

At Bangor, Ben Hardie tossed 4 1/3 innings of three-hit, shutout relief and had a two-run single in a seven-run third inning rally as Deer Isle-Stonington beat Bangor Christian.

Collin Ciomei and Ray Garcia had two singles and three runs batted in apiece and Shane Eaton singled twice for the Mariners.

Justin Phinney doubled and singled for Bangor Christian, Micah Dougherty doubled and Josh Frost drove in two runs with a single and bases-loaded walk.

At Manson Park in Pittsfield, John Wentworth pitched a three-hitter as Mount View of Thorndike earned the victory.

Kyle McDonald’s two-run single highlighted a three-run rally in the top of the third that rallied the Mustangs from an early 1-0 deficit.

McDonald finished with two singles, as did teammate Ethan Jean.

Victor Quint had an RBI single and scored a run for MCI, and also pitched a complete-game seven-hitter.

Searsport 14, Orono 2

At Orono, Shawn Johnson drove in seven runs on two doubles and a three-run homer as Searsport downed Orono.

Caleb Ashey tallied two singles, a double with five runs scored for the Vikings.

Travis Bryant doubled for the Red Riots.

At Lee, Emily Wilkinson hit two singles and a double, and had three runs scored and two RBI as Calais remains undefeated.

Steph Perry struck out eight batters and hit a two-run single. Darcey Gillespie added a three-run double for the Blue Devils.

Amanda Gifford, Brooke Harris, Aarika Ritchie and Dana Houghton each singled for the Pandas.

At Brewer Wednesday night, Nellie Wood hit a two-run triple in the top of the ninth to lift the Broncos to the win.

Lacey Littlefield turned in a strong pitching performance for Hampden, striking out 14 and scattering five hits. Hannah Grow, Michelle Wells and Liz Kiser each had two singles.

Christine Thoms singled twice for Brewer and Jordan McLain struck out 10.

At Blue Hill, Nia Megquier notched a single and a bases-clearing double, and struck out nine batters to lead Mount Desert Island over George Stevens Academy.

Kaitlyn Vaux doubled for the Trojans.

Brandi Winters hit a solo home run, double and single, and Robin Rioux added two singles and a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh for the Eagles.

At Bangor, sophomore righthander Jillian French pitched her first career no-hitter, striking out 11 and walking one over five innings.

Bangor Christian has won 13 straight.

Christin Pelletier had three singles and drove in two runs to pace Bangor Christian’s 11-hit attack. Jenn Hutchins contributed two singles and two RBIs.

Pelletier and Hutchins each scored twice.

At Ellsworth, Terren Hall struck out nine Eagles and hit a solo home run, triple and a single with two runs scored to lead Bucksport over Ellsworth.

Katie Hurd chipped in with two singles and an RBI for the Golden Bucks who remain undefeated.

Catie Cravens tallied three singles and drove in a run for the Eagles.

At Jonesport, Tiffany Alley hit two doubles and drove in three runs, and Brittany Alley struck out 15 as Jonesport-Beals cruised past Woodland.

Kristi Smith added two singles and a triple for the Royalettes.

Jessica Olsen talled two singles and a double, Julia Nicholar added a three-run triple and Cali Anthony singled twice with two RBI for the Dragons.

Emma Boutlier hit three singles and Megan Carroll added an RBI double. Jenn Burtchell chipped in with two singles for the Eagles.
