A Palmyra youth who had his license for a month was ejected from the car he was driving Thursday after it became airborne twice then rolled over. Speed was a significant factor in the early evening accident on Kennebec Road that sent the driver, Eugene Janvrin, 17, to the hospital along with his two passengers Tiffany Wiles, 17, of Newport and Enoch Petrucelly, 21, of Palmyra. Janvrin was the only one not wearing a seat belt, although he was seen walking around after the accident, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Tibbetts said.

All three were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for what Tibbetts described as serious but not life-threatening injuries. Information about their conditions was not available, although Tibbetts said the outcome could have been a lot worse under the circumstances.

“Their injuries weren’t a serious as they could have been,” Tibbetts said. “They were lucky.” Tibbetts said Janvrin was traveling at a high rate of speed and became airborne after going over a knoll. Janvrin lost control of the car when it landed and it struck some rocks in a ditch before coming airborne again, Tibbetts said. The car rolled over several times, Tibbetts estimated, and came to rest on its passenger side in a wooded area near the South Road. Janvrin was summoned for not wearing a seat belt and for violating his intermediate license, as he didn’t have an appropriately licensed person in the front passenger seat. Alcohol was considered to be a factor.

Correction: An article published on Friday’s local page in the Final edition about a high-speed crash in Dixmont one day before should have reported that alcohol was not a factor in the accident that injured three people.
