OAKLAND – A highway accident has claimed the life of a second student from the Messalonskee School District.
Christopher Curato, 13, an eighth-grader at Messalonskee Middle School, died Tuesday at Maine Medical Center in Portland of injuries he suffered in a weekend accident, officials said.
Killed instantly in Saturday’s crash of a minivan on Route 135 in Belgrade was Kahlen Coulombe, 16, of Belgrade, a Messalonskee High school sophomore. The only survivor was Curato’s 15-year-old brother, Nicholas.
Additional counselors were brought to the school system on Tuesday to help the students deal with their grief.
“There were lots of tears, lots of hugs, lots of supportive environments for the kids to go to. They were as you might expect in a situation like this: very, very, very sad,” school Superintendent James Morse said.
Police estimate that the van was traveling at 91 mph in a 45 mph zone when it crashed on Route 135. Police still have not determined which of the boys was driving, Kennebec County Chief Deputy Randall Liberty said.
