Internship opportunity

I have been enjoying the columns written by April Forristall, a May 2006 University of Maine graduate and a former intern at the Bangor Daily News. Internship opportunities provided by local employers such as the BDN are greatly appreciated by the staff at the UMaine Career Center where I am employed. We know that students have the best chance for success when they have gained practical experience by means of an internship, so it is heartening to read about April’s success in landing her internship with the BDN.

Please allow me, however, to make a brief mention of Career Center services beyond library books and binders of sample resumes as mentioned by April. The UMaine Career Center offers all of the information April was seeking at any hour of the day or night via our Web site which any UMaine student or graduate can easily find by going to the UMaine home page (www.umaine.edu) or by going directly to www.umaine.edu/career.

Help with resumes, cover letters, interviewing tips and sample resumes are all available. Our office remains open during all college breaks and we offer services during the summer as well, so students and recent graduates who wish to meet with a career counselor for a resume critique or to discuss finding an internship or a job after graduation can do so. Graduates can continue to use our services free of charge for one year after graduation.

We are happy to electronically post any local employers’ internships as well as full-time jobs where a four-year degree is desired. Any student who wants to go beyond networking with friends and acquaintances can use our database of jobs and internship opportunities and our alumni network, the Maine Mentor Program, to maximize their opportunities.

For employers interested in creating an internship, we offer a link on our Web site outlining the steps for creating a successful internship opportunity benefiting both employer and student.
