Maine Chess Champions

BANGOR – The John Bapst Memorial High School chess teams traveled to Milwaukee, Wis., on April 20 to compete in the National Chess Tournaments. The Maine State Championship team members turned in outstanding performances, and two teams placed seventh and eighth in their divisions.

In the Championship Division, senior Kevin Townsend of Holden competed with other players rated over 1,500 and won four out of seven games.

In the Under 900 Division, Zach Smith of Bangor won half of his games.

In the Under 1,200 Division, seniors Dave Jones of Orrington, Ben Amaral of Carmel, Josh Andrews of Levant, Nick Borrelli of Amherst, and juniors Frank Kessler of Amherst and Zach Lapierre of Milford placed eighth in the nation.

In the Under 1,500 Division, seniors Ray Solinger of Eddington, Jordan Trundy of Clifton, Colin Campbell and Conor Campbell of Orrington, junior Murray Bridges of Amherst and sophomore Fritz Eyerer of Newburgh placed seventh in the nation.

Old Town High School

OLD TOWN – The Old Town High School civil rights team designated the week of May 15 as Diversity Week. The team’s goal was to promote awareness of and respect for diversity in the school. The Monday kick-off was an assembly and a presentation by Thom Harnett from the Maine Attorney General’s Office about the Maine Civil Rights Team, followed by a workshop on stereotyping.

Tuesday saw a presentation by and discussion with Dan Williams from the Howard Foundation, followed by a presentation by Cathy Paul from Indian Island and the River Coalition. Wednesday offered the final part of a stereotyping workshop, and on Thursday a workshop on bigotry titled “Speak Up” was presented. Friday evening the week culminated in a Diversity Celebration with food, stories and presentations.

Members of the Civil Rights team, under the guidance of Colleen Fitzgerald and Sarah Bullard, are Andrew Cole, Mary Callaway, Kaley Roberts, Denise St. Peter, Erin St. Peter, Bradie Manion, Mia Caballero, Maggie Campbell, Andrea Cote, Gabriella do Amaral and Josh Francis.

Music teacher award

Music teacher Margaret “Kathy’ Jellison is the local winner in the eighth annual Sam’s-Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year Program. Jellison teaches music at Eddington and Holden elementary schools.

A $1,000 donation to the schools’ music programs, in honor of Jellison, was made to the schools in May. Jellison also received $100 for classroom supplies and a Sam’s Club Teacher of the Year shirt.

Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -These local students graduated May 22 during commencement ceremonies at Boston College:

. Andrew Tremble of Holden, with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management.

. Taylor Lynn of Orono, with a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics from the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management.

Bowdoin College

BRUNSWICK – Andrew Steltzer of Hampden was one of 23 Bowdoin College students to receive a Freeman Fellowship for Student Research in Asia. Freeman Fellowships are awarded to encourage Bowdoin students to travel and study in Asia. The fellowships are intended to increase understanding and awareness of Asia among students majoring in any academic discipline.

Bridgewater College

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Francis Waldron of Milford graduated recently from Bridgewater College with a degree in communication studies.

Champlain College

BURLINGTON, Vt. – These area students were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Champlain College:

. Leah Bilyk, who is enrolled in the social services program. She is the daughter of Mark and Janet Bilyk of Orono.

. Tiffani Lindsey, who is enrolled in the elementary education program. She is the daughter of Robert and Vicki Lindsey of Veazie.

Colby-Sawyer College

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Angelan Bull of Bangor recently graduated from Colby-Sawyer College with a bachelor’s degree in studio art.

Eastern Maine Community College

BANGOR – Eastern Maine Community College recently hired Danny Williams as its new foundation president and director of development. Before his appointment, Williams worked in a number of capacities at the University of Maine, including fundraising, admissions, enrollment management and student programs. His most recent position was director of annual and reunion giving. Williams also served a term in the Maine Legislature.

Primary in his role with Eastern Maine Community College, Williams will lead the annual appeal, direct alumni relations and launch a capital campaign to complete the last phase of the new Campus Center. The first two floors of the Campus Center opened in September 2004. A third floor will complete the project.

Williams holds a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Maine.

Husson College

BANGOR – Husson College has announced that several area students have been named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Who’s Who honors are based on academic achievement, service to the community, leadership and potential for continued success.

New Hampshire Community Technical College

LACONIA, N.H. – Graduating from New Hampshire Community Technical College on May 20 were:

Norwich University

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Ninety-eight Norwich University students were commissioned into the Armed Forces in three ROTC ceremonies on May 13. Brian Groshon of Hampden was one of 16 cadets commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Norwich University, the oldest private military college in the nation, and the birthplace of the Reserve Officers Training Corps, commissions officers into all branches of the military. Corps students, to graduate in uniform with a corps diploma, complete six semesters in their chosen ROTC branch. Cadets seeking a commission complete a fourth year of ROTC classes and meet other criteria.

Providence College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Emily Reed of Orono graduated cum laude during commencement ceremonies May 21 at Providence College. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education.
