As the temperatures start to heat up – which they have in the past couple of weeks – training, particularly speedwork, can be difficult for area runners.

The Sub 5 Track Club, based in Bangor, holds track workouts every summer on Wednesday nights at the Pendleton Street Complex in Brewer, starting at 6 p.m., a time when the sun starts to set and temps are cool and ideal for running.

The workouts started last week, and continue through August 23rd, and range from cruise intervals, where a runner runs at a comfortably hard pace for a certain time or distance, to economy reps, where a runner runs a short distance while focusing on their form but trying to run at a relatively fast pace.

You don’t have to be a member of Sub 5 to participate, all runners are invited. For a complete listing of workouts, head to www.sub5.com.

Runners with any questions about the workouts can contact Glendon Rand at runsub5@gwi.net.

Sub 5 Scholarships

Local high school runners looking to gain valuable training through a summer camp or earn a college scholarship don’t have to look any further than the two scholarships the Sub 5 Track Club has offered over the years.

Any senior cross country and/or track and field athlete from a Penobscot Valley Conference high school can apply for the Sub 5 College Scholarship.

The presentation of the scholarship, which is in the amount of $500, is made at the annual Walter Hunt 3K on the Fourth of July.

Past winners have included PVC standouts such as Parker Pruett, MacKenzie Rawcliffe, Oriana Farley, Molly Balentine, Erin Beasley and Ian Fraser.

Meanwhile, underclass PVC runners can fill out an application for a scholarship to attend one of four running camps around the state.

The runner who is chosen will receive a full tuition scholarship to one of the following running camps of their choice: Bowdoin College’s Dick Fosbury Track Camp, University of Maine Cross Country Camp, Colby College Cross Country Camp and Saint Joseph’s College Cross Country Camp.

Applications for both scholarships are available at www.sub5.com.

Two days, two fast races

Two of the state’s fastest races – both one-mile runs – will be held on the same weekend.

On Saturday, June 17, the Garelick Farms Main Street Mile, formerly known as the Grant’s Dairy Milk Run – will be held in Bangor starting at 9 a.m. while a day later, the second annual KeyBank New England Mile, which attracted some of the fastest runners in the Northeast a year ago, will be held on Congress Street in Portland, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Both races produced fast times last year, with Judson Cake of Bar Harbor winning the Main Street Mile in 4 minutes, 24 seconds while Andy Powell captured the race in Portland in 4:07.05.

The Main Street Mile is the third race in the Sub 5 race series this year, and attracts a lot of younger runners. Local high school stars such as Lexi Wakeling, who now runs at the University of Maine, Riley Masters and Jay Lewey all finished in the top 20 last year.
