Two baseball players with Maine connections were among those selected Tuesday during the first day of the 2006 amateur baseball drafted.
Ryan Reid of Portland, a righthanded pitcher at James Madison University, was selected in the seventh round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, while former University of Maine pitcher Steve Richard, now a reliever at Clemson, was chosen in the eighth round by the Seattle Mariners.
Reid was the third pick of the seventh round and the 199th choice overall. The former Deering High School star went 10-4 with a 3.43 earned run average for James Madison this spring, and set a school single-season record with 124 strikeouts. His 10 wins led the Colonial Athletic Association, and he was named to the All-CAA second team this spring after being named to the CAA All-Rookie Team last year.
Reid played on Class A state championship teams at Deering in 2001, 2003 and 2004.
Richard compiled a 13-3 record in two seasons in Maine before transferring to Clemson last summer after former Black Bears’ coach Paul Kostacopolous left to fill the head coaching vacancy at Navy.
This spring, Richard has been used strictly as a reliever at Clemson, the No. 1-ranked team in the country. The Billerica, Mass., native has an 0-1 record with a 4.30 earned run average in 21 appearances covering 23 innings. Richard has struck out 14 and walked nine, and opposing hitters have a .315 batting average against him.
