Bradford

New postmaster

Susan Lyford will be sworn in as Brenda Knuthson’s replacement as Bradford’s new postmaster at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at the Bradford Town Office, 1 Wilder Davis Road.

Lyford previously worked as officer in charge at the Bradley, Milo and Corinth post offices. As postmaster, Lyford will be responsible for three employees and will handle mail for 110 box holders and 425 possible rural deliveries. The oath of office will be administered by Susan S. Mills, manager, Post Office Operations for the U.S. Postal Service, District of Maine.

Dedham

Camp CaPella project

Members of the Junior League of Bangor are planning a Done-in-a-Day project, Saturday, June 10, to help maintain Camp CaPella at Phillips Lake in Dedham.

Established 45 years ago by United Cerebral Palsy of Maine to provide a summer camping experience for young people with disabilities, the program has been suspended this year because of financial constraints.

However, a campaign to raise funds to run the program in the future is under way.

Meanwhile, Kristen Hamlin reports, community volunteers, including members of the Bangor Junior League, are planning “a spring cleanup of the camp” that will include “planting flowers, cleaning up the beach area, and cleaning the main lodge, main bath and bunkhouses.”

Local business owners are being asked to donate plants, flowers and garden supplies, and volunteers also are welcome to assist with the project. To make a donation or volunteer, call Hamlin at 944-8028, or Stephanie Cote at UCP, 941-2952, Ext. 206.

Hermon

500-page town history

Copies are still available of the recent history, “Hermon, Maine Then and Now,” a 500-page volume by Mary Gaudreau, Rosanne Gray and the late Bernice Heath.

The book includes military listings for the Civil War through the Gulf War, information on the railroad, schools, early families and businesses, and lots of pictures.

There are two photographs of pupils at School No. 6, Northern Maine Junction, one from 1908 or 1909 and the other from 1929. There is a 1947 picture of pupils at School No. 11, photos of Hermon High baseball teams for 1954 and 1965, and a list of known teachers who taught at one-room schoolhouses up through 1950.

The book is available for $65 plus $3.25 tax. Mailing is $9 per book because it has to be insured. To order by mail, send checks to Rosanne Gray, 21 Stage Road, Hermon, ME 04401. To save mailing costs, call Gray at 848-3862 and arrange to pick up your copy.

Kenduskeag

New postmaster

Brenda Knuthson will be sworn in as the new Kenduskeag postmaster at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at the Kenduskeag Union Church, 826 Kenduskeag-Levant Road.

Knuthson will assume her new position after serving as the postmaster in Bradford since 1994.

As postmaster she will be responsible for three other employees, handling mail for 211 box holders and 380 possible rural deliveries.

The oath of office will be administered by Susan S. Mills, manager, Post Office Operations for the U.S. Postal Service, District of Maine.

Winterport

Car show and drag race

The Winterport Dragway will hold its sixth annual Car Show and Drag Race Saturday, June 10.

The show will feature vehicles from all eras, with particular emphasis on cars and trucks from 1950 to the present. Imports, Mustangs, Corvettes and Cameros will have their own class for awards, as will motorcycles and snowmobiles.

Along with the car show and drag races, the dragway also will hold its first summer Camp-out Weekend along with an Import-Sport Challenge, Lawn Mower-Small Tractor Shoot Out and ATV Quad Challenge.

The show is sponsored by Ruth & Wimpy’s Kitchen, Ashmore Bros. Inc. and Jordan’s Snack Bar. The rain date is June 17. For more information, contact Rick Palmer, track manager, at 223-4786.

60 miles for breast health

Angela Bulmer of Winterport will join thousands of other dedicated women and men at the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day event benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust. The participants will walk 60 miles during three days to raise breast cancer awareness and to raise money for research and community outreach programs.

Two years ago Angela’s sister JoAnne was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer, a more aggressive disease with a greater likelihood of recurrence, a poorer prognosis and a decreased chance of survival. Thanks to donations, a drug called Herceptin was developed and approved in 1998 that greatly increases the odds for breast cancer patients like JoAnne. JoAnne is participating in a clinical trial for Herceptin, which helped decrease her chances of cancer recurrence from 35 percent to 5 percent.

“At the age of 14, I lost my favorite aunt to breast cancer. I do not want to lose my sister, too. So I have decided to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day. Please help me and more than 200,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the USA alone by making a donation,” said Bulmer.

“I look forward to marching through the streets of Boston with thousands of others as we raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer.” This year in Maine, 900-1,000 women and men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Breast Cancer 3-Day participants have an opportunity to celebrate breast cancer survivorship, honor those who lost their lives to the disease, and to have an impact on funding for breast cancer programs.

The Breast Cancer 3-Day in Boston will start Friday, Aug. 4, and end with closing ceremonies on Sunday, Aug. 6. Thousands of walkers will cover about 20 miles a day, traveling at their own pace. The walkers will be supported by hundreds of volunteer crew members who will provide meals, water and snack stops, gear transport, hot showers, portable restrooms, safety on the streets and comprehensive medical services.

In order to participate, each walker must train for the event and commit to raising a minimum of $2,200. Many walkers will raise more than the minimum. To help prepare for the Breast Cancer 3-Day, coaches who assist in training and fundraising support each walker. Clinics, meetings, training sessions and mailings provide ongoing support.
