Diabetes support group

BANGOR – St. Joseph Healthcare’s Diabetes and Nutrition Center will now offer a free diabetes support group during evening hours, in addition to the daytime group.

The first evening meeting will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, at the center, Building 1, St. Joseph Healthcare Park, 900 Broadway.

Support group members share their personal experiences relating to diabetes management, stress reduction techniques and daily coping skills. Diabetes educators facilitate the meetings and provide updates on nutrition, exercise, medications and supplies. Family members are welcome.

The daytime group meets at 1 p.m. the first Thursday of the month.

Autism and Asperger’s support

BANGOR – The Bangor Area Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome Support Group will meet 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, June 8, in Mason Auditorium at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

A social time begins at 6 p.m. The group will continue to meet the second Thursday of the month.

The group is open to all – parents of autistic kids, those with autism and anyone else interested in learning about autism.

Survivors day

CancerCare of Maine will be the host for National Cancer Survivors Day 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at the Bangor Waterfront. Those who have had a diagnosis of cancer, whether in treatment now or in the past, or someone whose life has been touched by a loved one’s cancer diagnosis, is deemed a survivor.

Survivors are invited to celebrate, honor the struggles and triumphs of the moment, share fellowship with others and enjoy an afternoon of music, Maine humor and food.

The celebration will begin with a welcome and opening remarks. Steel drum band Flash in the Pans will perform at 1:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and lMaine humorist Clyde Folsom will perform after the 1:15 p.m. concert. Activities for children and teenagers will run throughout the afternoon. Educational and resources displays will be available.

Steve’s Stagecoach will serve barbecued chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, salads and strawberry shortcake. Ice cream also will be served.

The event is free and no reservations are required. A tent and folding chairs will be provided, or bring a blanket and sit on the grass.

Women’s health center

BANGOR – Northeast Cardiology Associates, Bangor Daily News, BHC Consulting Group and WERU were among the many corporate sponsors of the Annual Volunteer Recognition and Awards Banquet hosted by the Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center on May 25. More than 100 attendees participated in the successful fundraising event which included a banquet, awards ceremony and auction.

Businesses and artists from around the state donated more than 70 items for the silent auction, ranging from fine art and jewelry to homemade desserts and gift certificates to eateries and shops. The auction, coupled with a raffle for a zero-gravity lounge chair donated by Webb’s RV, was one of the most profitable in the 12-year history of the event.

Other corporate sponsors who made the event possible included Affiliated Pharmacy Services; Bangor Payroll; Miller Drug; Sargent, Tyler & West Insurance; Independent Medical Associates, PA; Worden Law Offices; Bangor Interpreting Agency; Rainstorm Inc.; and Town & Country Realtors.
