Anyone who has attended any event at the Bangor Opera House understands what Penobscot Theatre Company board member Cary Weston means when he writes that the facility “is in desperate need of renovation.”

He reminds readers the building needs attention “from cosmetic work to the outside and the facade, to handicap upgrades, water, seating and safety issues on the inside.”

And, he writes, “for years, the balcony has been shut off to patrons and used for storage because of safety concerns.”

To help with renovations, the PTC board “is kicking off a fundraising campaign” with the help of one of our favorite funnymen, Maine humorist Tim Sample.

Sample headlines two shows for the Bangor Opera House renovation campaign, the first at 5 p.m. and the second at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at the opera house on Main Street.

The first 50 ticket purchasers for each show receive an autographed box set of Sample’s “The Bert and I Years,” and everyone in the audience will receive a can of Moxie and a Whoopie pie.

For your added pleasure, my Bangor Daily News colleague and local comedian Chris Quimby of Brooks will be the opening act for each show.

“The Bangor Opera House holds treasured memories for so many folks in the Bangor region,” Weston writes. “From a first date, to a movie, to the treasured annual ritual of ‘A Christmas Carol,’ the Opera House has been home to everything from vaudeville to ballet and everything in between. It’s a landmark that must be preserved, but we need community help to get it done.”

One way you can help with that effort is by enjoying this very special evening.

Tickets can be obtained online at www.penobscot

theatre.org or by calling the box office at 942-3333.

If you cannot attend, but wish to make an online donation to help with the restoration, visit the Web site above.

Caroline Travis Tully invites you to the Bangor Garden Club annual plant sale from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at the bandstand in Paul Bunyan Park on Main Street in Bangor.

“We offer home-grown perennials from our own gardens,” she wrote, adding that “selected young evergreens, annuals, herbs and houseplants” will also be available.

Proceeds benefit the club’s “newly established University of Maine scholarship fund benefiting horticultural and forestry majors as well as defraying the cost of flower gardens that we plant in the city.”

The Bangor Federal Credit Union yard sale, planned for last week, was postponed due to rain, Stacey Young writes.

The yard sale is now 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 10, in the parking lot of BFCU, 6 Dirigo Drive in Brewer.

BFCU employees donated all items, and all proceeds benefit the credit union’s Ending Hunger Campaign.

In the event of rain, the sale will be held in the credit union lobby.

Members of the Houlton Garden Club invite you to their Green Thumb Plant Sale beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 10, in Memorial Park next to Cary Library in that community.

“Most plants will be perennials, but we also will have some house plants,” writes HGC president Marlene Hofstetter.

Sale proceeds benefit the local Dollars for Scholars program, help purchase “plants and bushes for the beautification of Houlton,” Hofstetter writes, and go toward the “200 trees for Houlton’s 200-year anniversary project next year.”

After a very successful first event last year, Charlotte Dillworth and members of Jonesboro Grange No. 359 are hosting another sausage and pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Jonesboro Elementary School.

Admission is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children under 12.

Dillworth said proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit activities of the grange.

A public bean supper to benefit the youth group of St. Andrew Lutheran Church of Ellsworth begins at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at the church on Route 1 in Ellsworth.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for youth, free for children under 2 and just $15 for families.

The public is welcome to take advantage of a free blood pressure clinic being offered by the Belfast Public Health Nursing Association from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, at the BPHNA office, 119 Northport Ave. in Belfast.

You do not need an appointment and walk-ins are welcome.
