Katahdin downs DI-S Anderson has a grand time leading Cougars

STACYVILLE – Keith Anderson hit a single and a grand slam to lead No. 3 seed and home team Katahdin past No. 6 Deer Isle-Stonington 8-2 in Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinal baseball action Friday.

Senior right-hander Patrick Willett allowed two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out nine for the Cougars. Cameron Cunningham and Owen McCarthy both hit an RBI single.

Jon Eaton hit an RBI single in the fifth inning for DI-Stonington and Rob Brown singled and later scored.

At Lee, Everett Houghton hit a three-run home run in the first inning to lead top-seeded Lee Academy to the win over No. 8 Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook.

Tyler Thompson singled and homered for the Pandas. Kyle McLeod hit an RBI single and Charlie Boulrisse doubled and recorded nine strikeouts.

Robbie Toothaker hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Warriors and Rusty Toothaker singled twice.

At Gardiner, Corey Cushing scattered seven hits while getting eight strikeouts and issuing two walks to lead the visiting Witches past the Tigers.

Cushing and Mitch Peasley each singled and scored a run in the second inning and the Witches added the winning margin with runs in the third and sixth.

Nick Acheson, Will Phelps and Mike Burdin each hit a double for Gardiner.

At Bucksport, Joe Robicheau hit a two-run home run in the second inning which turned out to be the decisive hit as top-seeded Bucksport defeated No. 8 Rockland.

Todd Freeman hit an RBI single for the Golden Bucks as Chris Maguire and Joe Soper both added a single.

David Benner hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Rockland and Ben Baudanza-Sturks had two singles and an RBI. Josh Elwell doubled and Mike Marsh hit an RBI single.

At Ellsworth, Addam Lupo hit a two-run double in the first inning and an RBI single in the sixth to push No. 3 Ellsworth past No. 11 Foxcroft Academy.

Matt Homich hit two doubles and scored two runs for the Eagles and Cory Smith doubled and singled to knock in two runs.

Adam Dow singled twice with an RBI for Foxcroft and Logan Forrest added and RBI single.

At Searsport, senior Matt Nickerson allowed gave up six hits and one walk while striking out eight to lead No. 4 Searsport past No. 5 Orono.

Nickerson doubled and singled and scored a run for the Vikings. Caleb Ashey and Sean Johnson both hit an RBI double.

Tony Raymond singled twice for Orono and Travis Dunton scored a run.

At Blue Hill, Lucas Marks hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away as No. 1 George Stevens Academy defeated No. 9 Central.

Caleb Hale pitched the shutout for the Eagles allowing only one hit with five strikeouts and no walks.

Collin Henry had two singles with two RBIs while Nick Saunders singled and doubled with an RBI. Blake Wessel added two singles and a double while Josh Astbury hit a two-run double for the winners.

Charlie Henry had a single for the Red Devils.

At Hampden, junior righthander Stephanie Whittier allowed only two hits and one walk and struck out seven to lead No. 4 Belfast by No. 5 Mount Desert Island.

Liz Brown and Helen Berry each singled twice and drove in a run to lead Belfast while Kallie Aldus added an RBI single. Lizzy Anderson chipped in with a triple and Whittier aided her own cause with a double and single.

Mia Megquier doubled for MDI and Miranda McIntyre singled.

Sophomore Katie Knowlen allowed just one run on five hits and three walks while striking out nine for the Black Raiders. Cathy Sirois and Brynne Davis both hit two singles.

Jill Wren hit an RBI single in the third inning for the Huskies and Tiffany McLaggan singled and scored.

Junior righty Catie Cravens allowed five hits and no walks while striking five to earn the shutout for Ellsworth.

Emily Miller singled twice for the Eagles as Tessa Rockwood, Maggie Seavey, and Tasha Manning all singled.

Sophomore right-hander Ashley Kelley allowed one run on five hits and no walks while striking out six for Hermon. Jaime Beers, Mycah Cyr, Kate Campbell, Kelley, and Cheyanne Woodard each singled.

At East Machias, Joslyn Corey hit a double in the bottom of the fifth inning to drive in Mary Mawhinney from second base for the game’s only run as No. 3 Washington Academy went on to defeat No. 6 Dexter.

Kayla Wood pitched a complete game giving up four hits with five strikeouts for the winners.

Ashley Tilton, Sarah Rushforth, Wood and Mawhinney each singled for the Raiders.

Morgan Chapman, Jessica Kenney and Sabrina Cote each had a single for the Tigers.

Christin Pelletier recorded three singles and Aimee Sargent added two and two RBIs to lead the winners. Morgan Chasse chipped in with a two-run single and Amber Leathers had an RBI single.

BC plays Lee in a 4 p.m. semifinal today in Hampden. The two teams split during the regular season.

Amanda Clark hit two singles to drive in a run for the Warriors and Kim Grant hit a two-run single.

Ruth Arato doubled and singled for the Tigers.
