Moose lovers will flock to Greenville on June 17 to learn all about Maine’s largest land mammal.
“Moose Tales” is both an educational event and the grand finale of MooseMainea month in the Moosehead Region. The program is sponsored by the Natural Resources Education Center and will be held at the Community House in Greenville at 4:30 p.m.
Biologist Doug Kane of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife will share his expertise on the subject of moose with a slide presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. In addition, there will be a demonstration of moose calling.
The Natural Resource Education Center is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to informing the public about the natural resources, lands and waters of the Moosehead Lake and North Woods region.
The organization sponsors year-round programs that feature the area’s resources and their uses and management.
The event is free of charge and donations to the NREC are appreciated. For more information call Suzanne Auclair at 534-7715.
Camp assistance available
The Maine Conservation School at Bryant Pond has received notification from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife that the 2006 Moose Permit Auction raised more than $50,000 that will be available to provide scholarships for summer programs at MCS.
In the week-long program, campers age 10-13 will be certified in hunter safety (either archery or firearm). The money will be awarded in $200 scholarships.
In addition, MCS has been awarded a $16,000 grant from the Maine Outdoor Heritage Fund to provide scholarships for several programs: The one-week Maine Junior Woodsman/Woodswoman for ages 12-14, the two-week Maine Woodsman/Woodswoman for ages 13-15 and the four-week Junior Maine Guide program for ages 15-18. These scholarships will cover half the program cost.
Both scholarship funds will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, but some restrictions may apply.
