Brewer High School
Brewer High School has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2006.
Jennie D’Amico, daughter of Tami and Christopher D’Amico of Brewer, has been named valedictorian for the Class of 2006. She plans to attend Harvard College in Cambridge, Mass., to study government or economics.
She has achieved high honors all quarters, received four academic letters, a National Merit Scholar and AP Scholar with honors. She was a Maine Youth Leadership attendee, selected to attend Girls State, and was a United States Senate Youth Program delegate.
D’Amico received the Maine Principals’ Award, PVC Scholar athlete award, Phi Beta Kappa Association of Maine High School Award, Princeton book award, Bausch & Lombe Honorary Science Award, Society of Women Engineers Certificate of Merit, Rensselaer medal, peer tutor award, departmental awards including Spanish, microeconomics, English, mathematics, Leslie M. Ohmart Jr. Excellence in Science Award, math team award triathlete, cross country most improved, coach’s award.
She has participated in concert band, pep band, Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Dirigo Wind Band. She has been class president, a student council representative, Eastern Maine Association of Student Councils vice president, president and secretary of key club, Relay for Life, math team, National Honor Society, Se Beowolf, peer tutor, cross country, indoor track, spring track and varsity AFS Costa Rica Summer Language Study. She has volunteered for the Baldacci campaign, National Folk Festival, Bike the Vote and for MPBN.
Hilary Fernald, daughter of Bruce and Gail Fernald of Brewer, achieved the second-highest grade-point average for the Class of 2006. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA and will attend the University of Maine with a full-tuition scholarship.
She scored in the top 50 students in the state of Maine on the MEA and was a National Merit Scholarship finalist.
Alyssa Quimby, daughter of Timothy and Dale Quimby of Orrington, achieved the third-highest grade-point average for the Class of 2006.
During three years at BHS, she received her academic “B” letter, the Superintendent’s Award and had a grade-point average no lower than 95. She received the Scholastic Award from the Brewer Knights Club and a $2,000 scholarship from the Early College for ME program to Eastern Maine Community College.
She is attending United Technology Center for culinary arts with plans to pursue culinary arts after Eastern Maine Community College.
Old Town High School
Old Town High School has announced speakers for the Class of 2006 graduation, which was held Friday in the MacKenzie Gymnasium at Old Town High School.
Christopher Avery, son of Brenda and Francis Avery Jr. of Milford, was named valedictorian for the Class of 2006. He will attend Colby College.
He has received the Maine Principals’ Association Award, Principal’s Leadership Award, President’s Education Award, and a Good Citizenship Award. He was one of the top 50 scorers in Maine on the Maine Educational Assessment. He has earned an academic letter six times during his high school career. He was student of the month, a member of the Junior Engineering Technical Society team, National Honor Society and concert and symphonic bands.
Avery was a member of the varsity football team, indoor and outdoor track and field teams. He was named to the PTC Class B football all-academic team and received the Penobscot Valley Conference Scholar Athlete Award. He is active in the Catholic Youth Ministry and is a member of Boy Scouts, now working on his Eagle Scout project.
Cassandra Hintz, daughter of Ray and Marilyn Hintz of Stillwater, was named salutatorian for the Class of 2006. She will attend the University of Wisconsin at Madison to study civil engineering.
She was a member of the concert and symphonic bands, cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams. She was a member of the French club, math team, Key Club, Junior Engineering Technical Society team and the National Honor Society.
Hogan Marquis is the son of Roger and Regina Marquis of Old Town. He will attend the University of Maine to study secondary education with a concentration in science.
He was awarded the GE Star Award Scholarship, a varsity letter winner in boys soccer – senior captain, swimming and track and field.
Marquis is a member of the National Honor Society, Pep club, Key Club, and a student of the month recipient. He has been a volunteer as a seventh-grade science camp counselor, participant of United Way Lend-A-Hand day, and Bangor MS walk.
Denise St. Peter is the daughter of John and Renee St. Peter of Old Town. She will attend Tufts University to study international relations.
She was a member of the swimming team and captain of the tennis team. She participated in drama, junior prize speaking and band. She was a delegate to Girls State, a member of the National Honor Society, and the Junior Engineering Technical Society team. She served her class as vice president and her school as a member of student council.
St. Peter was an officer in Key Club, a freshman mentor and a member of the math team. She has served as facilitator for the Civil Rights Team and was awarded the Sen. Joel Abromson Scholarship Award from Equality Maine.
Orono High School
Principal Cathryn B. Knox has announced that three seniors were selected by their classmates to be student speakers at the commencement activities at Orono High School.
Graduation was Sunday at the Maine Center for the Arts in Orono.
Travis Hall, son of Tim and Irene Hall of Orono, delivered the welcome address at graduation. He was president of the senior class, a member of drama club, Spanish club, newspaper staff, swim team and tennis team. He participated in school plays both state and New England math leagues. He will attend the University of Maine in Orono to study education.
Ellen Parent, daughter of Tim and Ruth Parent of Orono, delivered the farewell address. She was a national qualifier on the speech and debate team, and was a member of French club and student council. She participated in softball and swimming, and serves on the Orono Public Library board. She will attend St. Michael’s College in Vermont to study economics.
Anna O’Neil, daughter of Bob and Mary O’Neil of Orono, spoke at the June 4 baccalaureate. She was vice president of the senior class and has received academic recognition pins and top student awards in art. She participated in the literary magazine, newspaper staff and the leadership team. She has been a member of the Spanish club, student council, field hockey, spring track and swim teams. She will attend the University of Maine in Orono to study nursing and art.
Kate Kirby, daughter of Clay and Karen Kirby of Orono, was voted class marshal. One of the top 10 graduating seniors, she is the recipient of academic recognition pins, a top student award in Spanish, and has participated in basketball, golf, tennis, soccer and swimming. She also participated in Girls State, class officer, chorus District 5, school plays and newspaper staff. She was a member of the drama club, Spanish club, Spanish National Honor Society and student council. She will attend Gordon College in Massachusetts to study business administration.
