The Class C state track and field meet has been rescheduled to 4 p.m. today at the Foxcroft Academy complex.

Maine Principals’ Association assistant executive director Larry LaBrie said he spoke with members of the MPA’s track and field committee. The committee supported holding the meet today, a date which was proposed by the Class C coaches when the meet was postponed Saturday morning due to rain and conditions at the facility, such as a slick running surface and standing water on portions of the track and in the throwing areas.

“You can listen to the weather report, but you can’t always depend on it,” LaBrie said.

It was the second time this year the Class C meet was postponed due to rain. The original date was June 3 at Morse in Bath.

Any student-athlete who qualified for the state championship but couldn’t make Saturday’s meet because of graduation or another school obligation will be permitted to compete in today’s meet.

LaBrie said the MPA hadn’t heard from any schools that were having trouble putting together transportation for their students.

Fort Kent athletic director Paul Michaud said Saturday he would like to see the meet today rather than June 17, which had been briefly discussed as a possibility by Class C coaches who met Saturday morning at Foxcroft.

“The year is ending, schools have graduations and people have plans,” Michaud said. “It’s Father’s Day weekend. I think next Saturday is just another gamble.”

At least one school was more than ready to compete today.

“I did have an e-mail from the North Yarmouth Academy coach after they got home,” meet director Mary Cady said Saturday. “He said, ‘You know, despite having made the trip all the way up there we’re excited about running under the lights.'”

Cady said there will be some minor changes to the schedule of field events to accommodate those events that aren’t meant to be held under the lights.

The first group of field events will include the boys javelin and girls discus. Then the officials will do the boys discus and girls shot put.

The girls javelin was one of three events completed at the original June 3 meet.

Class B stars at New Englands

With both Class A and Class C track and field meets postponed to Saturday, that left just Class B to send qualifiers to Saturday’s New England championships in New Britain, Conn.

Mainers shined in the mid-distance and distance races.

McAuley of Portland’s Abby Iselborn had the top finish among the Maine girls group, placing third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 4.31 seconds. Lake Region of Naples’ Miles Bartlett topped the Maine boys with a third in the 1,600 (4:21.09).

Bartlett’s teammate, Kevin Floster, was fifth in the 800 with a 1:56.34.

Iselborn was also 11th in the 3,200 (11:08.05).

Waterville’s Bethany Karter-O’Brien also placed, taking fourth in the shot put with a top throw of 41 feet, 7 inches. Hampden’s Nori Francis-Mezger was 11th in the javelin (110-4).

Danielle Hutchins of MDI was ninth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.74. She also placed 13th in the 200 (26.46).

New England championships for tennis and golf are scheduled for Monday.
