ELECTION 2006

Election reminders

Today’s primary election also comes with a few reminders from the Secretary of State’s Office:

. For the first time, certain 17-year-olds will be able to vote in the primary. As long as the 17-year-old voter will turn 18 by the General Election on Nov. 7 and is otherwise qualified to vote, he or she may participate in the primary.

. Residents can register to vote on primary day. However, the registration must take place in person before the registrar of voters in a resident’s town. Those wishing to register to vote should contact their town office or city hall.

. Voters who are already registered but not enrolled in one of Maine’s three officially recognized political parties (Democrat, Republican or Maine Green Independent) can enroll in one of those parties and participate in the primary election. Voters who are already enrolled in a party, however, cannot now switch parties to cast a ballot in another party’s primary election.
