BANGOR – A two-car pileup Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 95 near the Stillwater Avenue exit left two injured.
The accident occurred around 5 p.m. when a bicycle flew from a moving vehicle’s bike rack and landed in the northbound roadway near Exit 186, according to Maine State Trooper David Millett.
Brenda Bilotta, 28, of Bangor pulled her vehicle to the side of the highway and got out to retrieve her bicycle.
As Bilotta tried to wheel the bike to safety, Daniel Davis, 43, of Kenduskeag, driving a 1993 Ford pickup truck, saw Bilotta in front of his vehicle and slammed on his brakes, according to Millett.
Davis then put on his four-way flashers to signal to others that Bilotta was present. Within minutes, however, Davis’ truck was rear-ended by a 1997 Toyota pickup truck driven by Curtiss MacDonald, 45, of Bangor.
Both trucks were demolished, according to Millett.
Davis’ wife, Lisa Davis, 45, who was a passenger in the truck, had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Bangor Fire Department. She was treated for neck and back pain at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor and then released.
MacDonald had a badly bruised arm and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, according to Millett.
Northbound traffic backed up to the Hammond Street exit. It took Bangor Fire Department and four additional state troopers about 45 minutes to clear the road.
Bilotta and MacDonald both were headed to the Bangor City Forest to go biking, according to Millett.
