Forensic mapping

BANGOR – The Maine Real Estate and Development Association will hold a breakfast seminar, “Forensic Mapping: Expediting Projects with Digital Due Diligence,” 7:30-9 a.m. Thursday, June 22, at the Holiday Inn Odlin Road.

Increased regulation calls for improved project planning. Due diligence is compromised when important information is disregarded or overlooked.

Forensic mapping uses digitized data to create visual layers of critical characteristics of a property to ensure investigations are comprehensive and accurate, thereby streamlining the planning process. The results clarify, reveal, track changes, persuade and inform so all stakeholders have the information they want before pencil ever touches paper.

Forensic mapping improves predictive modeling. Historical land use investigations determine what may be unearthed before excavators dig.

Digital due diligence identifies potential environmental hazards and recognizes risks of infringement on historical or environmental resources. When equipped with such knowledge beforehand, project planning and risk management activities are more informed.

Brownfield and Superfund site rehabilitation dictates that the history of a site be taken into account for risk mitigation. Digital due diligence lends an advantage to traditional models by placing data in “real space,” providing more accurate location and site analysis for project proposals.

Forensic mapping integrates historical maps, land use, ownership deeds and other related resources and layers them with modern data.

Panelists will show how forensic mapping and Digital due diligence can help predict potential roadblocks to projects and present compelling visual support for all interested parties. Principals of Orbis LLC, Kirsten Read Boettcher and Rosemary Mosher, will present the use of forensic mapping using Geographic Information Systems and present a case study from the Bangor area.

Penobscot Green Clean

BANGOR – Representatives of the city of Bangor and the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce were on hand to welcome Penobscot Green Clean on June 9, as the newest business downtown.

Penobscot Green Clean, owned by Linda Bishop, is the home of Green Earth cleaning products. The company sells vacuum cleaners, repairs all vacuum cleaners, carries a full line of Fuller Brush products and stocks janitorial supplies at its 61 Union St. location. Penobscot Green Clean is an expansion of Penobscot Cleaning Services, “where we have strived to use environmentally safe products,” Bishop said. The new business is dedicated to consumer awareness and to making homes and businesses “cleaner and greener.” The business is located in the former Goodwill store building at the end of the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge. Marketing the mustard

BANGOR – Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications announced that it has been selected by Raye’s Mustard of Eastport for branding, public relations and Web site marketing services.

Work will include revisions of the Raye’s logo and jar labeling, catalog development, public relations and advertising campaign management and Web site design and building with e-commerce capabilities.

The Raye family has been grinding mustard in the same location since 1903.

In 1900 J.W. “Wes” Raye, whose father captained coastal schooners on the Bay of Fundy, set up his first mill in the family smokehouse to grind mustard sauces for the growing sardine industry. Boarding kennel meeting

BREWER – Staff members of Bear Brook Kennel in Brewer returned recently from the American Boarding Kennel Association’s 2006 regional meeting, where they participated in educational seminars.

The meeting in Meredith, N.H., included seminars on dog behavior, legal concerns and canine influenza. Discussion topics included voluntary facilities accreditation.

The American Boarding Kennel Association is a national trade association dedicated to the betterment of the boarding kennel and pet care industry.

BREWER – UPS recently honored Otis Godley, a feeder driver with UPS, for completing 20 years of service with the company. He was recognized for loyal service contributions. Godley, of Eddington, began his career in 1986 as a package service provider with the company.
