Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School
MARS HILL – Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School of Mars Hill recently announced the honor parts for the Class of 2006. Graduation was held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 9 at the high school gymnasium.
Whitney Grass, daughter of Warren and Donna Grass of Mars Hill, was named valedictorian for the Class of 2006. She plans to attend Bowdoin College to study English.
She participated in Future Farmers of America, National Honor Society, All-Aroostook Music Festival, All-State Music Festival, French club and the math team. She has held several offices including FFA secretary and president, class officer, and French club executive committee. Grass was recognized for her efforts as student of the month in grades seven, 10 and 12, Who’s Who, FFA Greenhand award, FFA chapter and state degrees, perfect attendance, English award, history award, advanced math and French awards.
She volunteered at American Red Cross blood drives, the mentoring program, Tadpoles youth leader, as well as directing and participating in her church cantatas.
Andrew York, son of Brent and Kay York of Mars Hill, was named salutatorian for the Class of 2006. He plants to attend Liberty College to study physics and math.
He served as National Honor Society vice president and has been a member of the French club. He is a two-time William C. Warner MVP of the Eastern Maine Basketball Tournament, McDonald’s All-Star, McDonald’s All-State Academic Team, All-State Bangor Daily News, All-State Portland Press Herald, All County Team for Basketball 2005-06 and All County Team for Baseball 2003-2006.
York has volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Golf for Kids, American Red Cross blood drives and has refereed ballgames at the local recreation department.
Katie Sargent, daughter of Alan and Janet Sargent of Bridgewater, was named first honor essayist for the Class of 2006. She plans to attend Northern Maine Community College to study nursing.
She was involved in the National Honor Society and the French Club. She participated in varsity cheerleading and was the manager of the varsity baseball team. She was recognized with awards for geometry, chemistry and academic excellence. She is employed at a local bakery, has been a volunteer at the American Red Cross blood drives and the local recreation department’s Halloween party.
Laura Grass, daughter of Darren and Wendy Grass of Blaine, was named second honor essayist. She plans to attend Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky. to study communications.
She was involved in the TRUST team, French club and All Aroostook. She served as class secretary, Future Farmers of America junior adviser and National Honor Society president.
Grass was recognized for achievements with a biology award and an honor cord of six consecutive years on the honor roll. She has volunteered at Martha and Mary’s Soup Kitchen, Special Olympics, American Red Cross blood drives and church activities.
