Hutson Memorial Road Race

OLD TOWN – Bruce Hutson’s commitment to the Pine Tree state was a testament to the power of Maine’s allure, which proved enticing enough to bring a 30-year West Coast inhabitant back to the East for occasional indulgence in New England adventure, said organizers of a race in his memory.

A Pennsylvania native, Hutson was first acquainted with the state as a University of Maine student, and after graduation in 1973 he served as the treasurer and tax collector for the city of Old Town. His profession led him westward to San Francisco where he worked in the dental industry for many years.

Hutson was an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed fishing trips on the Truckee River and camping among the giant Sequoias in the redwoods of California. His adventurous spirit remained intact and largely rooted to the wilds of Maine.

In honor of his memory and his connection to the Old Town community, Hutson’s widow, Suzy Millian, is collaborating with the Old Town Public Library, the River Coalition and the Old Town-Orono YMCA to sponsor the Bruce Hutson Memorial 5K and 10K Road Race at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 15.

The race is one of many Canoe Hullabaloo events taking place July 13-16, and will begin and end near the Old Town Riverfront Park on Main Street.

Participants may pre-register for $10. Day of the race registration will be $15. Runners of all skill levels are welcome. The first 100 entrants will receive a free T-shirt, and awards will be given in each age category as well as overall best times for male and female participants.

For registration information, call the Old Town Public Library or visit www.canoehullabaloo.com.

Benefit golf tournament

KENDUSKEAG – A golf tournament will be held Saturday, June 24, at the Kenduskeag Golf and Country Club.

The format is an 18-hole best ball scramble, shotgun start, morning and afternoon tee times, four-person team. Contests include longest, most accurate drive, closest to the pins on par 3 holes and a trip to Las Vegas or $2,500 for a hole-in-one on hole number 8.

Registration fee is $40 per player, which includes greens fees and lunch. The tournament will benefit Choices, a therapeutic foster child placement agency in Corinth. For more information and registration, call Doug at 884-7330, or Patty at 285-0133.
