Youth take part in drug awareness fair

OLD TOWN – True or False: In 2005 there were more vehicle casualties than drug-related deaths in Maine. False – 168 people died from car accidents and 178 died from drugs.

This is just one of many facts explored by Leonard Middle School pupils who took the River Coalition’s Drug-Free Jeopardy challenge during the school’s third annual health fair on May 5.

Correct answers were rewarded with flip-flop key-chains, encouraging students to “stomp out substance use;” and with “Brain Drain” anti-marijuana pens, highlighting the negative affects of drug use.

The fair, sponsored by Leadership, Interactive Theater, Civil Rights and Aces participants, was dubbed a success. Many organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Spruce Run, Acadia Hospital, Bangor Region Partners for Health, University Credit Union and The Career Center, participated in the event.
