4 arrested in Hammond Street burglary

Bangor police arrested four people early Friday morning and are looking for a fifth in connection with a break-in at a Hammond Street shop.

Called to the Middle Earth shop about 3:40 a.m. for a burglary in progress, Bangor police Officer Eric Tourtelotte was about 200 yards away and quickly found two men in the vicinity.

One man, Gordon Leigh Cronin, 26, of Dexter, was walking away from the closed business while Daniel Francis Johnson II, 20, of Carmel was moving along the side of the building, the officer reported. Johnson was wearing knitted white gloves and carrying a pry bar, the officer said.

A window was broken on a rear door to the shop, near where Johnson had been, according to the police report.

Bangor police Lt. Mark Hathaway found a car parked behind Papa Gambino’s, which is next door to Middle Earth. Two women, Heather Mae McRee, 18, of Bangor and Darcy Lynn Michaud, 20, also of Bangor, were seated in the back, but couldn’t explain what they were doing there at 4 a.m., Hathaway reported.

All four were charged with burglary, and Johnson was charged additionally with possession of burglar’s tools. Authorities are looking for a fifth person believed to be involved in the burglary.

Witnesses say they saw a man hauling material to a parked car from the Industrial Metal Recycling plant on Broadway in Bangor late Wednesday night. The property manager reported that 600 pounds of insulated copper wire, valued at $480, was missing.

Police found a trail of loose wires from the plant to the spot where the car was parked. No arrests have been made, but witnesses wrote down the license plate number of the car.

Bangor police Detective Brent Beaulieu responded Friday afternoon to a call on an alleged domestic dispute on Parker Street.

A witness told police George Cote, 46, of Bangor became enraged and began yelling at his girlfriend and her son’s girlfriend.

Cote, who lives next door, was told to leave and went home only to return with a 4-foot aluminum rod, Beaulieu was told. Cote allegedly threatened his girlfriend with the rod, although witnesses disagree if he struck her with his fist or not.

Cote was transported to Penobscot County Jail and charged with disorderly conduct and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.

A Bangor woman said she was distracted by a bee in the cab of her SUV on Friday afternoon, causing her to drive off Ohio Street in Bangor and crash.

The SUV rolled over, and because of the extensive damage, Tina M. Beede, 37, was extricated from the flipped vehicle, Bangor police Officer Steve Jordan, reported. She was treated for minor injuries at Eastern Maine Medical Center and later released, Jordan said.

The damage to the SUV was estimated at $10,000.

Stopped for erratic driving early Friday morning on State Street, Joshua York, 22, of Bangor claimed to be someone else, even though the dog tags he was wearing said otherwise.

York was seen backing up on State Street at 1:24 a.m. and then squealing his tires, Bangor police Officer Wade Betters reported. York admitted to drinking and smoking marijuana earlier, but claimed to be someone else, according to the police report. Betters noticed the man was wearing military-style dog tags with York’s name on them; other officers subsequently recognized York.

He was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, operating a motor vehicle after license suspension, and failure to give correct name and birth date.
