In order to gain a berth in today’s Class C state championship game, the Telstar of Bethel softball team had to beat one of the top pitchers in the state, regardless of class, in the Western Maine regional final.
The Rebels have yet to figure out Alyssa Libby and defending Class C state champ Central of Corinth, however.
On Saturday they’ll get another shot, as the same two teams that faced each other for the Class C state title last year will meet again for the state crown.
This time, Central and Telstar play at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish at 11 a.m. That game will be followed at 4 p.m. by the Class A state final between Cony of Augusta and Biddeford.
Lee Academy and Buckfield vie for the Class D title at 11 a.m. at Brewer’s Coffin Field. Bucksport and Cape Elizabeth are in the B title game at 4 p.m., also in Brewer.
Telstar gained its second straight WM Class C championship by beating Michelle Libby, the standout pitcher for Sacopee Valley of Hiram.
Telstar is after its first state title since 1991 when the Rebels shut out Madawaska 11-0.
Central has won it twice, the first time coming in 1985.
The Red Devils beat the Rebels 2-1 last year, when Telstar started Jillian Kimball. This time around Central is more likely to face Jessie Farrington, who tossed a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and one walk to earn the win over Sacopee.
Farrington, a shortstop on last year’s team, was the only repeat hitter for Telstar against Central’s Libby, who is 18-1.
Undefeated Bucksport faces first-time Western Maine Class B winner Cape Elizabeth, which has given up only five runs in its last eight games. Pitcher Jackie Moran (16-2) has allowed one run in the postseason and tossed a no-hitter in the semifinals.
The Golden Bucks counter with Terren Hall (13-0) who has allowed two runs and eight hits while striking 15 in the Eastern Maine playoffs.
Lee Academy is making its fourth state-game appearance in five years, but the Pandas have yet to win a title. They’ve inched closer every year however. They were outscored 13-0 and 12-0 by Buckfield in 2002 and 2003, respectively, and then lost 7-3 last year to Richmond.
This year, the Bucks are back in the state championship game thanks to a 5-1 win Thursday over Richmond. Pitcher Desiree Brackett threw a four-hitter with two strikeouts and no walks.
Brackett was a pinch hitter in the 2003 meeting, which means an entirely new pitching matchup because Lee’s Marci Moors is now a second baseman for the Pandas.
Brooke Harris, a sophomore, will get the start for Lee. Last year against Richmond she took a 7-3 loss, allowing 11 hits and walking four with two strikeouts.
Cony, which has been one of the top teams in Eastern Maine Class A, broke through for its first EM title since 1992.
Biddeford, in the state title game for the first time since 2002, beat defending WM champ South Portland 2-1 on Tuesday.
The game could come down to a pitchers’ duel between Cony’s Monica White and Biddeford’s Michelle Gagnon.
White had a memorable semifinal in which she racked up 30 strikeouts over 17 innings, allowing just two hits and no walks in a 1-0 victory.
So far this postseason White has fanned 50, scattered nine hits, given up no runs and walked two in 38 innings. She has 16 shutouts this year.
