Bangor Band readies for summer concert series

Members of the historic Bangor Band invite you to join them for their 148th consecutive year as they proudly present their 2006 Summer Concert season.

The opening concert is 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the Bangor Public Library on Harlow Street.

“With the addition of some talented new personnel,” wrote Bob Pentland, “and the fine direction of our new conductor, Fred Goldrich, the band is filled with enthusiasm and excitement as we diligently prepare for the summer season.”

He added that summer selections will include highlights from Broadway shows such as “The King and I,” “Gypsy,” and “Guys and Dolls.”

The program will feature stirring marches, foot-tapping selections, trumpet solos, patriotic pieces “and many other familiar selections,” Pentland wrote.

All concerts are free, he added, “and we encourage people to come hear our revitalized band.”

“We look forward to continuing the American tradition of outdoor, summer band concerts for our Bangor audience.”

Following Tuesday’s concert, the band will perform at 9:50 a.m. Saturday, June 24, during R.B. Hall Day in Portland; at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, at Bass Park Bandstand; and at 11 a.m. in the Bangor 4th of July Parade and 7 that evening at Bass Park Bandstand.

The concert schedule continues at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, in Fairmount Park; 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at the Bass Park Bandstand; 6:45 p.m., Tuesday, July 25, at the Chapin Park Block Party; 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Bangor State Fair and 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 8, at the Bass Park Bandstand.

Celebrities with ties to Maine have painted, autographed or written messages on ceramic tiles for a musical mosaic auction on eBay which runs now through Sunday, June 25, to help support the Bangor Symphony Orchestra.

The tiles were submitted by Joanne Woodward, Howie Day, Donald Trump, Ricky Craven, Susan Sarandon, Kelly Preston, Keith Lockhart, Glenn Close, Sen. Susan Collins, Gov. John Baldacci, Jamie Wyeth, Arnold Palmer, Bill Swift, Boomer Esiason, Don McLean, Mike Bordick and Tom Watson and Family.

Gaynor Reynolds invites the public to attend the Sebasticook Valley Community Band Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at ECOTAT Gardens at the intersection of Route 2 and Annis Road in Hermon.

You should bring you own lawn chair and park in the Annis Road parking area.

And while this concert is free, donations are greatly appreciated.

You have the opportunity, as well, to stroll through the gardens before or after the concert.

Local bands whose members are post-high school are invited to compete in the Veazie Midsummer Music Challenge from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 22, on the field next to Veazie Community School.

Organized by Bill Masters, the challenge will feature up to 10 bands competing for cash prizes, including a $1,000 grand prize, $750 second prize and $250 third prize.

Bands will select three to four popular songs from the rock ‘n’ roll era that will include one Beatles song for their 20-minute set.

Judging criteria will include stage presence, ability to entertain and degree of difficulty of selected songs.

The public is invited to attend this family-oriented event. Admission is $10 and proceeds will be used to purchase instruments for VCS pupils.

Registrations must be received by Tuesday, June 27.

Preference will be given to Bangor-area bands.

Brenda Meehan of Brewer e-mailed that while the Brewer High School Class of 1971 Reunion Committee has “contacted many of our classmates, we still have several whom we have not been able to locate,” and she is hoping our readers can help.

BHS ’71 will celebrate its 35th Class Reunion from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Black Bear Inn in Orono.
