Bucks claim state crown Bucksport rallies to edge Capers

BREWER – The fourth Class B state championship for the Bucksport softball team – and the first for 16-year coach Michael Carrier – didn’t exactly come in true Golden Bucks fashion.

The Bucks made some errors, allowed some big hits, and made a few mental mistakes in Saturday’s game against Cape Elizabeth at Coffin Field.

But they hit the ball when they needed to, and that was enough against a Caper team that also made errors, gave up hits and made mental miscues.

Bucksport rallied twice, racking up four runs on four hits in the sixth inning to finally put away the Western Maine champs for an 8-6 victory and a state crown for one of the top programs that hadn’t won a title since 1987.

“This is the best thing in the world,” said Bucksport senior Brittni Adams as her mother, Michelle, gave her the trophy. “We’ve been here a lot and we’ve never won one. We did awesome.”

Cape Elizabeth (17-3) was making its first appearance in a state softball game.

The two teams combined for nine errors, three wild pitches (all by Cape’s Jackie Morin) and three passed balls. Five of the combined 14 runs were unearned.

The Bucks, who committed only two errors in three postseason games before making three Saturday, attributed their mistakes to nerves.

“We did struggle today. I think a lot of us were really nervous,” said Adams, who plays second base. “But we just stayed confident. We kept our heads up the whole game.”

Cape coach Joe Henrikson was “surprised” by his team’s errors.

“Obviously we got here with pitching and defense, making the plays behind the pitcher,” he said. “She throws strikes, we make the plays, and keep the walks down. There were just a lot of routine plays that didn’t get done today. … I think you saw just two tough teams laying it out on the line today.”

Terren Hall pitched another win for the 20-0 Golden Bucks, but with all the errors her most important accomplishment Saturday may have come in getting on base in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the fifth Hall hit a two-out single to right, advanced to third on an error and then scored on Katie Hurd’s single to center for a 4-3 lead.

Cape’s Rachel Budkiewicz answered with a two-run double in the top of the sixth, but the Bucks’ bats came alive in the bottom of the inning.

Sarrah Winters reached on an error to lead off the inning followed by singles from Alex Sullivan and Kayla Allen.

Allen’s ground-ball hit to left-center plated Winters for a 5-5 game, and then a combination of wild pitches, passed balls, a sacrifice by Lindsay Lenor and RBI singles from senior Katie Allen and Hall boosted Bucksport to an 8-5 edge.

“It took me a while to get something off her,” said Katie Allen, who was 0-for-3 until her hit plated Kayla Allen for the eventual winning run. “She wasn’t pitching anything we hadn’t seen so we just had to have confidence. We pulled it off when we needed it.”

Cape’s Marla Houghton, who went 3-for-4, hit a one-out solo home run in the top of the seventh, sending a shot over the 200-foot fence in left-center. Hall struck out the next batter and induced a groundout to end the game.

Houghton also singled and had an RBI double in the fifth.

“The first time she was up we threw her a fastball and she crunched it [for a single],” Carrier said. “The second time we threw her a riseball. She crunched it for a double. So we threw her a drop ball and she ripped it for a home run. What a good hitter.”

It was the only homer Hall allowed all season.

Although the Capers outhit the Bucks, Bucksport got everyone in the starting lineup on base at least. Hall, Hurd and Keely Sullivan each reached three times. Sullivan got aboard twice on errors, including one in right field that helped push across a run.

“We were right on her but we weren’t getting good solid hits,” Carrier said. “As long as we kept hitting we knew we could create something after a while.”
