BANGOR – Firefighters rescued a boy from the Kenduskeag Stream early Monday night after the group he was cooling off with discovered the water was too deep.

Bangor Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Cyr said about four children were floating down the stream after 6 p.m. when they could no longer touch bottom.

While some made it to the shore, two others clung to a rock in the middle of the stream near the Harlow Street bridge.

The Bangor police and fire departments arrived at the scene about seven minutes after receiving the call at 6:29 p.m.

“En route, we heard that the one who could swim made it to shore,” Cyr said.

The other boy did not know how to swim and remained on the rock.

A firefighter clad in a wet suit and supported with ropes walked to the rock, grabbed the child and returned him safely to shore.

No one was injured.

“They were just a little scared,” Cyr said.

Cyr did not release the names or ages of the individuals involved.
