FRYEBURG – A Freeport woman died Monday in a freak accident after a tree fell onto the tent she and two friends were in at a campground.
Dara Kaufman, 22, was camping at the Fiddlehead Campground on the Saco River with two friends from Portland when a thunderstorm with high winds passed through at about 7 p.m., said Fryeburg police Chief Wayne Brooking.
The winds knocked down a large oak tree that fell onto the tent, killing Kaufman, Brooking said.
Her two friends, a man and a woman, were also in the tent but were uninjured, the chief said.
