Library to kick off summer reading program

Brewer Public Library director Laura England reports registration is open through Friday, June 23, for the Expect Adventure Everywhere BPL Summer Reading Program.

Reading starts Monday, June 26, and the final party is Friday, Aug. 11.

The classes are preschool-grade one (in which parents may read to children,) grades two-four and grades five and up, with areas of interest for specific age groups.

Special events include Bears of North America 10 a.m. Friday, July 14, featuring representatives of the Chewonki Foundation; a Live Lobster Presentation 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 18, by staff of the Weathervane Restaurant; The World Famous Zachary Field Show 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 25; Eat Right For Your Body 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, with staff of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension program and Hannaford supermarket, and the final party, Judy’s Tune Room, 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11.

All events take place at the library, 24 Union St. in Brewer.

Participants receive a bookmark, coupon or treasure chest prize each week, and those who complete the program receive a new paperback and certificate.

You are invited to celebrate the summer solstice at 1 p.m. today in Room 102 of the science building on the campus of the University of Maine in Machias.

After a brief meeting of the St. Croix Valley International Garden Club, professor of marine ecology Dr. Gayle Krauss will speak about several new campus gardens.

After the talk, guests will tour a labyrinth and meditation garden.

The peonies are gorgeous this year, so those who love that special flower won’t want to miss the fifth annual Peony Garden Tour 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at 23 Ohio St. in Bangor.

Admission is just $2 to view more than 70 varieties of Paeonia as well as other flowers.

To learn more about growing peonies, you are invited to join the Peony Society of Maine. Annual dues are $8, and you can obtain more information from Ken Liberty at 945-9726.

Lynda Coffey will demonstrate Celtic Applique after the meeting of the St. Croix International Quilters Guild at 7 tonight at the Methodist Homes Recreation Center on Palmer Street in Calais.

Debbie Giguere e-mailed that due to some “unexpected accidents,” two teams had to withdraw from the Good Samaritan Agency sixth annual Women’s Golf Tournament that begins with a shotgun start 1 p.m. Friday, June 23, at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

Therefore, there are some last-minute openings for this fundraiser.

The entry fee is $50 each for the nine-hole tournament that includes a social hour after golf as well as awards and prizes.

The Mount Desert Island Hospital Auxiliary Bake Sale is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, June 23, in the lobby of The First of Bar Harbor at 102 Main St.

There you will find casseroles, pies, breads, cookies, quiche, luncheon items and other delicious treats.

If you wish to contribute a baked item or make a monetary donation, it will be graciously accepted since all proceeds benefit Mount Desert Island Hospital Organization.

Betsy Graves Rose wrote that Orono High School Class of 1981 is hosting its 25th reunion at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at the Black Bear Inn in Orono.

“All members of the Class of 1981, and their guests, are welcome,” she wrote of the event that features a buffet supper for $30 per person.
