Alumni association

HERMON – Efforts are in progress to establish a Hermon High School Alumni Association. A reunion for HHS alumni will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer. Scholarships for military children

BANGOR – The annual Scholarships for Military Children Program winners were announced. Nearly 5,000 students applied at commissary locations worldwide.

Jolene Belanger of Glenburn is a recipient of a $1,500 college scholarship awarded at the Bangor Air National Guard Base, one of 268 commissaries operated by the Defense Commissary Agency. She plans to attend the University of Maine in the fall. Her Bangor High School and community activities include National Honor Society, track team captain, SEED Club president, AIDS committee co-president and Pathfinders Program volunteer. She is the daughter of James and Debbie Belanger.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program was initiated in 2000 and is open to qualified children of members of the U.S. Armed Services, including active duty, retirees, National Guard and Reserves members and children of deceased military personnel.

Applicants must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average, participate in school and community activities, demonstrate leadership qualities and write an essay: If you could meet one of the great military leaders, present day or historical, who would it be and why?

Manufacturers and organizations that do business with the commissary funded the scholarships. Belanger’s scholarship was funded by Alder Foods-Lactaid. For more information, visit www.militaryscholar.org.

Teachers Association scholarships

HOLDEN – The SAD 63 Teachers Association announced the names of the two recipients of $500 scholarships made possible by association members. The recipients are:

. David Coleman, a 2006 graduate of Brewer High School. He will attend Eastern Nazarene College in the fall and is the son of Dennis and Roseanne Coleman of Holden.

. Jordan Trundy, a 2006 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. He will attend Wheaton College in the fall and is the son of David and Lori Trundy of Clifton.

High school seniors who graduated from eighth grade at the Holbrook School are eligible to apply.

Teen Parent Program grads

BANGOR – A graduation ceremony was held June 8 for the Good Samaritan Agency’s Teen Parent Education Program for students. The program offers alternative education for pregnant and parenting teenagers. Seven young women graduated. Keynote speaker was Ellen Port.

Good Samaritan Agency is a nonprofit organization founded in 1902 and offers services to single parents such as alternative education, a day care program and adoption. For more information, call 942-7211.

Bangor High School

BANGOR – Emma Chaiken was named the 2005-06 recipient of the Saint Michael’s College Scholarship and Service Book Award. The award recognizes students for a commitment to volunteerism and leadership through community service. Award recipients are high school juniors who are inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent school-sponsored honors organization. They must demonstrate a commitment to service activities in high school or community organizations, taking leadership roles in those activities.

Chaiken was given the book “First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers” by Loung Ung, a 1993 Saint Michael’s College graduate. She is the daughter of Paul and Debora Chaiken of Bangor.

Colleges

Bates College

LEWISTON – Two local students graduated from Bates College during commencement ceremonies May 28. They are:

. Lindsy Blazej with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and political science. A dean’s list student, Blazej spent the fall 2004 semester in Madagascar and the winter of 2005 in Hobart, Australia. Through an Otis Fellowship, she conducted research the summer of 2005. A graduate of Nokomis High School, Blazej is the daughter of Kenneth and Barbara Blazej of Dixmont.

. Matthew Moretti with a bachelor’s degree in biology. A 2002 graduate of Hampden Academy, he is the son of Gary Moretti of Hampden and Dana Schmidt of Hampden.

Bentley College

WALTHAM, Mass. – Michael Desmaris of Hampden has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Bentley College. He is majoring in management.

College of the Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Samantha Kingsbury was named to the dean’s list at College of the Holy Cross. She graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science and Spanish. A Phi Beta Kappa member, she is the daughter of Lisa and Doug Kingsbury of Hampden.

Cornerstone University

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Jared Davis of Brewer was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Cornerstone University.

Eastern Maine Community College

BANGOR – At 10:45 a.m. on June 15, Eastern Maine Community College held a ground-breaking ceremony on a new, 165-person residence hall.

Scheduled to open in August 2007, the additional residential space will end a three-year housing crunch for Eastern Maine Community College precipitated by the Maine Community College System shift to community college in 2003.

Enrollment increased across the seven community colleges in Maine by 43 percent over the past three years.

With 125 EMCC students currently living in local Bangor motels, the added residential space will allow all students to live on campus.

“This residence hall is important to our future growth,” said college President Joyce Hedlund. “While the local motels have provided an excellent short-term solution and we are very grateful for their support and cooperation, this is obviously not the ideal solution for creating a total college experience for students.”

Constructed of red brick with metal detailing, the four-story building will match the newly renovated Campus Center and Maine Hall. Each room will house two students.

Each floor will have a room designed for students requiring special accommodations. The residence hall will offer Internet access, a computer lab, laundry facilities, a large meeting room and an apartment for the resident director.

The new housing facility is funded through self bonding as approved by the Maine Legislature, with dormitory fees paying for the building over the course of 20 years. The total cost will be $5.3 million.

Maine Community College System and EMCC administrators, local officials and legislators, members of the EMCC Advisory Council and Foundation, members of the community and Pizzagalli Construction Co., the design-build contractor, reviewed plans for the new facility before ceremonially launching the construction of the project.

The residence hall will be located about two-thirds of the way down the main parking lot, opposite Katahdin Hall, the recently renovated campus center. Constructing the facility, which includes classroom space and a computer lab, is one of the first steps in the overall campus improvement and growth plan. Future steps include adding a parking lot and a college quad with lawn space for student use.

Hofstra University

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Tim Robertson of Bangor was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Hofstra University. A graduate of Bangor High School, he is the son of Jeannine and Andrew Robertson of Bangor.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Matthew Ellis of Bangor graduated recently from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

Suffolk University

BOSTON – Kelly Ginn of Clifton graduated recently from the New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art. She also was accepted by Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges in recognition of outstanding academic merit and accomplishment.

Quinnipiac University

HAMDEN, Conn. – Jeremy Stormann graduated summa cum laude during commencement ceremonies at Quinnipiac University on May 21. He received a bachelor’s degree in diagnostic imaging, specializing in magnetic resonance and computer tomography.

Andrew Knapp of Bangor, the son of Fred and Judy Knapp of Princeton, received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Maine. He was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester.

Breanne Tewhey, the daughter of Lorilei Tewhey of Bangor and James Tewhey of Cary, Ill., received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Maine. A graduate of Bangor High School, she was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester.
