2 teens charged in burglary at Calais High School

CALAIS – Two people broke into Calais High School on Wednesday night, but an alarm inside the River Road building brought police and within minutes two people were in custody.

Around 9:10 p.m. the alarm sounded and Officer Roy Wise responded. He found a car parked behind the school.

“There was a male subject by the vehicle and he ran into the high school,” Cpl. Jason Fowler said Thursday.

Wise called for backup and another Calais police officer and a U.S. Border Patrol agent sealed off the building.

Aaron Kesel, 18, and a 17-year-old male, both of Princeton, were arrested and charged with burglary.

The students were members of the St. Croix Regional Technical Center, which is part of the high school.

Fowler said the two are believed to have been seeking computers. He said the equipment was valued at around $1,500

He said that police still were investigating how the two may have gotten into the school.

This is not the first time there has been a break-in at the high school.

Six years ago two students broke in and stole three gold balls symbolizing the Calais Lady Blue Devils state basketball championships. Those intruders busted up TVs, computers and copy machines.

They also breached a propane line in the science laboratory and gas fumes filled that portion of the building. Water faucets in the science lab were left on and sink drains were plugged with paper. A 19-year-old high school student and a 17-year-old male juvenile were arrested. Damage to the building was estimated at more than $50,000. After they trashed the school, alarms were installed.

Since then Calais has got some advanced alarm systems for its public buildings, Fowler said.

The two are expected to appear in court on July 24.
