Brewer man still critical week after cycle crash

BANGOR – A Brewer man remained in critical condition Thursday at a Bangor hospital, nearly a week after he was thrown from a motorcycle in Garland.

John “Joe” Quirk, 25, was riding with friends on June 16 in Garland when he lost control of the motorcycle he was riding, a Penobscot County sheriff’s deputy said Thursday.

The accident happened Thursday night on Route 94.

Quirk was wearing a helmet and appeared to have suffered some internal injuries as well an injury to his right arm, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Tibbetts said.

Tibbetts said Quirk was conscious and complained of a lot of pain in his chest when the deputy went to talk with him at the hospital.

Quirk initially was taken to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center, where a hospital nursing supervisor said Thursday that he was in critical condition.

The accident is still under investigation, said the deputy.

Friends reported that Quirk was an inexperienced rider and that he had purchased the motorcycle earlier this year, the deputy said.

Friends also indicated that Quirk had had something to drink earlier that night at a restaurant in Dexter, but it wasn’t clear what role, if any, alcohol played in the accident, according to the investigator. A blood sample was taken from Quirk as part of the investigation, Tibbetts said.

Quirk was toward the back of a group of four or five others when he pulled to pass some of the other motorcyclists and then pulled back into the driving lane.

Quirk lost control and was thrown from the motorcycle into a ditch.

Markings show that Quirk continued forward about 75 to 100 feet along the ditch while the motorcycle continued an estimated 100 feet beyond that, flipping end over end in the air.

The motorcycle’s seat and gas tank were ripped off, Tibbetts said.
