ALL-STAR SOFTBALL

Thoms, East A-B all-stars tip West 2-1 West cruises to C-D win

AUGUSTA – It may have been just an all-star softball game, and Brewer’s Christine Thoms may have had a three-week layoff, but the competitive fires were still there for the Brewer third baseman.

Thoms went 3-for-3 – against three different pitchers, no less – and scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Eastern Maine senior all-stars from Classes A and B to a 2-1 win over their Western Maine counterparts in the Maine Softball Coaches Association’s senior all-star games Thursday evening at Cony Park.

The West dominated the C-D game, rolling to a 17-3 victory over the East.

Thoms said she was eager to make up for a disappointing end to the high school season, which came when the Witches were upset by rival Bangor in the Eastern Maine Class A preliminary round earlier this month.

“I needed the win. I wanted the win,” said Thoms, who will work for a year before going to school. “With how our season ended I wanted to the win. It’s my last game.”

Thoms singled in the first inning off Biddeford’s Michelle Gagnon, who earned the win in the Class A state final last week; in the sixth off Hannah White of Wells, who was named the Western Maine Class B Player of the Year, and then in the ninth off Poland’s Kelly O’Connor.

The ninth-inning single was a one-out ground ball into left field. She advanced on a ground out by Messalonskee of Oakland’s Lauren Blake, and came home easily when Brunswick’s Liz Boynton smacked a double to deep center field.

“I knew I just had to get around, get home and get that run in,” Thoms said. “It was just mental toughness I guess, knowing what to and how to do it. The pitchers did their best.”

The West’s second-inning run held up until the bottom of the eighth. Bonny Eagle of Standish’s Jessica Nassetta scored after drawing a one-out walk, scooting to third on a single by McAuley of Portland’s Rachel Delcamp, and crossing the plate on a fielding error.

The East finally tied it up in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an RBI single by Gardiner’s Becky Dixon. She plated Medomak Valley of Waldoboro’s Megan Bradstreet, who had reached on an error.

In the C-D game, the West all-stars scored nine runs in the top of the third inning.

The West touched Central of Corinth pitcher Alyssa Libby for seven hits, one walk and one hit batter.

The West racked up 15 hits.

Sacopee Valley of Hiram’s Michelle Libby started and had six strikeouts over two innings while allowing one base-runner after hitting Limestone’s Emily O’Neal with a pitch. West pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.

Central’s Traci Underhill recorded the East’s first hit in the bottom of the fourth when she singled to left but she was thrown out at second trying for a double.

The East managed to score three runs off Buckfield pitcher Desiree Brackett in the bottom of the seventh, thanks in part to three errors. Alyssa Libby reached and scored on an error, while Bangor Christian’s Amber Leathers got aboard via an error and scored on a Kerri Harris groundout. Dexter’s Sabrina Cote scored the third run on a single, and she eventually scored on the third error.
