Advertising scrutiny

I am willing to accept that the Jack T. Chick advertisement that appeared in the June 10-11 issue was not carefully read by the editors and simply slipped by their scrutiny. I don’t believe the Bangor Daily News would intentionally publish such scurrilous anti-Catholic drivel. But now that several letter writers have brought your attention to the content of the ad, why have the editors still not published a repudiation?

Editors note: The BDN apologizes for the Jack T. Chick advertisement published its June 10-11 weekend edition. The content of the ad offended many readers, especially those of the Catholic faith. Advertising published in this newspaper reflects the opinion of the advertiser, not that of the Bangor Daily News and its ownership. Regardless of the opinion expressed, however, prospective advertising that is offensive or inappropriate for publication should be screened and refused by an internal process at the BDN. In the case of the Jack T. Chick advertisement, that internal system failed. Again, we apologize to our readers.
