PRESQUE ISLE – The Maine Potato Board announced this week that the Ronald Moir family of Woodland is the 2006 Farm Family of the Year.
The Moirs runs a seven-generation family farm.
Ronald and Ruth Moir are both descendants of farm families going back at least four generations.
Ronald Moir started farming on the homestead farm on the Thomas Road in Woodland in 1967. Today, he farms with his sons Alan, Jason and Scott.
The family expanded to other farms in Woodland and Caribou, planting 1,500 acres of potatoes, grain and other rotation crops.
“We strive for maximum yields and quality by the use of new technology and products, and by planning ahead with future sales and contracts,” Moir said of his family’s successes.
Moir has served on numerous agricultural committees, served as a selectman for the town of Woodland and on the town’s school board.
The family will be honored at the industry dinner during the annual Potato Blossom Festival.
