Bay Wraps

A wrap is a perfect kind of lunch. If made properly, it’s filling, not too messy, and combines a variety of flavors into one neatly wrapped package. And unlike its cousin, the burrito, there’s a bit more room for experimentation.
Bay Wraps, tucked into a side street in downtown Belfast, has been around for eight years, and recently opened an Augusta location as well. My mother and I stopped in a few weeks ago, and spent more time looking at the huge menu than it took for the friendly, laid-back “wrappers” to make our actual meal.
I ordered the Yeh Man, which combines Jamaican jerk seasoned chicken and aromatic jasmine rice with scallions, red peppers, mango salsa, all covered in creamy garlic yogurt sauce. Though the intense flavors of the mango, garlic and jerk chicken threatened to overwhelm, the cool, soft rice evened everything out to create a sensation that was both savory and sweet.
Mom got the Teriyaki With No Saki, featuring grilled chicken and more of that wonderful jasmine rice with sauteed broccoli, onions and pineapple, slathered in a sweet, tangy teriyaki sauce. My mother wasn’t too hungry, so she ordered a small wrap, which is a dollar cheaper and still pretty big. I was ravenous, and my wrap filled me up but didn’t leave me feeling full.
Vegetarians can rejoice: Seven of the 20 wraps on the menu are meat-less, and aren’t just salad and cheese on bread, like some places seem to think a veggie sandwich should be. The Eggplant Wrapsody, with grilled eggplant, roasted red peppers, ricotta, feta cheese, mint, spring mix and salsa verde, should leave even the most cynical herbivores’ mouths watering.
The place is sunny and spare, with wooden tables and big windows. And considering that every wrap on the menu is just $6.90, it’s a great way to have a quick, cheap, tasty lunch.
