Casino Royale events to benefit Jina’s Gym Fund

Hopes are high that Casino Royale, which is 6-11 p.m. Friday, June 30, at The Atlantic Oakes in Bar Harbor, will be a tremendous success.

That is because all proceeds benefit the Jina’s Gym Fund, an effort to build a new gymnasium for the town of Lamoine in memory of the late Janina “Jina” Haslam.

Jina was just 14 when she died, tragically, a few days after graduating from Lamoine Consolidated School when she was hit by a car while on her bicycle.

Exclusively sponsored by The First and presented by the Lamoine PATRONS, or Parents & Teachers Recognizing Our School, and the Jina’s Gym Fund, tickets are $40 in advance or $50 at the door.

Advance tickets can be purchased by calling WNSX @ 97.7, 667-0002, or The Atlantic Oakes, 288-5801.

Angie Butler reports that since the fund was established, “family, co-workers, friends, students, businesses, townspeople, members of the surrounding communities and participants from as far away as England and Hawaii” have shown tremendous support.

Through mid-

May, the fund had reached $118,000.

This fundraiser begins with hors d’oeuvres from 6 to 7 p.m. followed by the Casino Royale from 7 to 11.

The event will feature 16 games, hourly Texas hold ’em poker tournaments, a 50/50 raffle and cash bar.

Music for entertainment and dancing will be provided by WNSX @ 97.7 disc jockey Bill DaButler, and prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the evening.

Those who would like overnight accommodations can purchase a Casino Royale package for two, for $165, at The Atlantic Oakes. The package includes admission to Casino Royale, an overnight stay and buffet breakfast. Call 288-5801 or e-mail www.barharbor.com for reservations.

Butler writes that “Casino Royale is certain to be a night of food, games, prizes and dancing, all while raising funds and further awareness for Jina’s Gym.”

Gaynor Reynolds wrote that the Sebasticook Valley Community Band Concert, which was to have been held June 20 at ECOTAT Gardens, was rained out and has been rescheduled.

That concert now starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, at ECOTAT, located at the intersection of Route 2 and Annis Road in Hermon.

You should bring your own lawn chair and park in the Annis Road parking area.

There is no admission, but donations are welcome.

Seating is limited and reservations are required by Wednesday, June 28, for those wishing to attend the Chautaugua Days 1920s Vintage Fashion Show.

The fundraiser begins with a cash bar at 11:30 a.m., followed by a noon luncheon and the show, Thursday, July 6, at the Manor Inn off Battle Avenue in Castine.

Sponsored by the Wilson Museum, tickets are $25 and can be reserved by calling the museum at 326-9247.

Pianist Eddie Madden will entertain during the event that is choreographed by Jean Miller and features clothing and accessories provided by Castine residents and Vintage Finery of Orrington.

Miller wrote that organizers are “excited about this show,” which will feature 28 vintage outfits.

The Kruger Brothers, a folk-bluegrass trio, appear in concert at 7 p.m. Friday, June 30, at Town Hall in St. Albans.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for the event, which benefits the continuing restoration of this community facility.

Advance tickets are $12, and tickets at the door are $15.

Advance tickets can be purchased at Katahdin Trail Saddlery in Newport, or by contacting Susan Bowman at 368-5599 or katatrail@gwi.net.

Linda Colford of Orrington reports the Camden High School Alumni Association Annual Reunion and Banquet begins with a social hour at 5 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at the American Legion Hall on Limerock Street in Rockland.

Members of CHSAA include graduates through 1965.

A brief business meeting and memorial service follows the banquet.

Tickets are $25 and can be obtained by calling Patricia Ayers at 236-3192 before Friday, Aug. 4.

CHSAA annually awards three scholarships to graduating seniors and/or postgraduates. Contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome and can be included with your banquet payment.
