CORINNA – A Parkman girl was seriously burned early Sunday morning while pouring a flammable liquid onto an outdoor campfire, according to a Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman.
Jennifer Engstrom, 16, is in critical condition at Boston Shriners Hospital, a hospital representative said Sunday night.
Just after midnight, the teenager was pouring either gasoline or kerosene from a plastic container when flames swept over her and ignited the jug in her arms, Stephen McCausland, public safety spokesman said Sunday.
State fire marshals investigating the incident said she suffered second and third degree burns on 45 percent of her body, McCausland said.
Engstrom was rushed by ambulance to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and then flown by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
She was treated and moved to the Boston Shriners Hospital.
Engstrom was visiting relatives on Cider Hill Road in Corinna and was in the backyard when, according to investigators, she retrieved the plastic fuel container from a nearby shed.
The campfire had just been lit, and Engstrom intended to use the fuel to enlarge it, McCausland said.
