STANDISH – Food that was left cooking on a stove while a man fell asleep appears to have set off a fire that killed him, investigators said.

The body of 31-year-old Donald King was found in his second-floor bedroom after fire swept his apartment early Saturday, the State Fire Marshal’s Office said.

The fire damaged the building on state Route 25, which contained four apartments and two businesses. None of the other eight occupants of the building was injured.

The fire was reported at 4:19 a.m. by a resident of one of the other apartments who smelled smoke.

Investigators believe that when King returned home early Saturday morning, he started to cook some food on the stove and then fell asleep. His body was found on his bed.

Two apartments located in the rear of the building were badly damaged, and there was smoke and water damage to the rest of the building. Investigators said they could not find a smoke detector in King’s apartment.
