Join the Friends of Dakin Pool for celebration

What better way to celebrate the hard work and success of Friends of Dakin Pool, who organized to save that “middle-aged” city facility, which was set for the financial chopping block, than by joining them in a celebration of its 50th birthday?

Friends of Dakin Pool board members Linda Dunn and Jody McDonnell invite you to a barbecue at 5 p.m., followed by a special family swim from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 30, at the East Side pool located at the end of Pine Street, off Stillwater Avenue across from Broadway Park in Bangor.

There is no charge for the barbecue or family swim, but you should bring your own lawn chairs or a blanket to enjoy your picnic on the grass.

Area residents who are current users of this pool, who once worked or learned to swim there are invited to join in the fun of sharing summer memories and celebrating the pool’s new lease on life.

And perhaps, you’ll learn how you can join Friends president Mike Robinson and become part of the Friends of Dakin Pool $100,000 capital campaign, “Summer in the City: The Campaign for Dakin Pool.”

The capital campaign, of which W. Tom Sawyer is the honorary chairman and Alicia Nichols the campaign director, will help build a new pool house, extend the pool fence to add a grassy area for play and picnics, and make other improvements.

If you cannot attend, but want to help preserve this facility, which is so vital to the summer health and happiness of residents of the East Side, send a check to The Campaign for Dakin Pool, P.O. Box 2657, Bangor 04402.

You can also donate, online, using a credit card or PayPal account.

You do not have to be a PayPal member to contribute in this manner, but you need to complete the Shipping Information before clicking the Pay button so Friends of Dakin Pool will have your mailing address for its records and an acknowledgement of your contribution.

My heartiest congratulations and continued encouragement are extended all Friends of Dakin Pool who are volunteering their time, energy and efforts to keep this facility up and running.

Director Jan Cox and members of the Brewer Hometown Band invite you to attend their concert 7 p.m. Thursday, June 29, in the parking lot of Brewer Auditorium.

You are reminded to bring your lawn chairs for the second in the band’s series of summer concerts.

The performance will be inside the auditorium if the weather is unfavorable.

Planners for the much-anticipated Old Fashioned Old Home Days Thursday, June 29, through Sunday, July 2, in Corinna, have some additions they want you to know about.

After the parade, which is 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1, the private library of the late Levi Stewart, which is not normally open to the public, will be available for your browsing pleasure at the Stewart Free Library.

The many antique vehicles in the parade will be on display behind the Corinna Historical Society.

Throughout the day, a quilt display will be conducted at Pleasant Street Church, where you will also find storytelling for the children all day.

A special surprise concert by Erin Buck will follow the concert of Bob Hughes and the Country Tuners, which is also after the parade.

Finally, seniors who want to escape the heat are invited to join Kay Gray and Jeanette Jones at 3 p.m. Saturday, at Corundel Commons, for what Gray describes as “a social event with card and board games and some refreshments.”

Inez Seguin of Eastport invites you to attend a book signing with Elsie O’Dell Dinsmore from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 1, at the Eastport Senior Center.

Dinsmore will be signing copies of her new mystery, “Bailey’s Bluff,” which Seguin explained is “the second in her Trafton Harbor series.”

The first, “Come to Tea, William,” was published by Belle Isle Books in 2005, a day after Dinsmore’s 78th birthday.

The Katahdin Area Council Boy Scouts of America 17th Downeast Antiques Fair is 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Blue Hill Fairgrounds.

A major fundraiser for the KAC, proceeds benefit Scout programs in Aroostook, Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Waldo and Washington counties.

Antiques dealers who would like more information about participating in the fair can contact show director Mike Cuskelly by calling 433-0421, e-mailing mckuskell@bsamail.
