BANGOR – The sixth annual Garelick Farms-Bangor Y Main Street Mile took place on June 17. Young and old alike gathered to compete in three levels – the Bangor Daily News Family Fun Walk, the Bacon Printing Recreational Run and the W.S. Emerson Competitive Mile Run for those who are able to complete, at most, a 7-minute mile.

One hundred thirty-four participants registered for the 1-mile course ranging in age from infant to 83.

The sunshine and temperature provided the perfect setting for the event. Forty-two walkers including children and adults, parents and grandparents pushing strollers, meandered down Main Street from the Best Inn to West Market Square.

The Recreational Run included 56 participants who ran the race just for the fun of it, and the Competitive Run brought 36 runners who competed for the top honors.

Twenty-seven awards were presented to the first-, second- and third-place winners of various age group and team categories.

Adam Goode, 22, of Bangor won the race as the Fastest Male and Jolene Belanger, 18, of Glenburn was the Fastest Female competitor.

In the 92.9 WEZQ Family-Team Competition, the team simply called “Orono” was the Fastest Team with four men ranging in age from 16 to 48. The Belanger Road Runners of Glenburn was the overall Fastest Family, combining the three fastest times of six family members who ranged in age from 11 to 46.

Rob Reeves, Bangor Y CEO, said, “Our goal is to get our community involved in healthy activities. This event is in line with our Activate America promise to encourage kids and adults of all fitness levels in a lighthearted, fun way and promote family-friendly, healthy living. We appreciate our community’s support for the event.”

At the finish line, 92.9 WEZQ-FM broadcast live as runners, walkers, family and friends gathered for a post-run celebration including awards presented by John Economy, Garelick Farms manager; and Tammy Hodgdon, Bangor Y senior health and fitness director and race coordinator. There were lots of additional prizes, snacks and drinks provided by event sponsors.

The Garelick Farms-Bangor Y Main Street Mile Milk Run was supported by Garelick Farms, Bangor Daily News, Bacon Printing, W.S. Emerson, 92.9 WEZQ-FM, Epic Sports, Maine Signs, Granville Rental, Bangor Hydroelectric, Pepsi-Aquafina, Bangor Firefighters, Henry’s Bridal and Formalwear, Hannaford, KeyBank, Bangor Police Department, the Sub-Five Track Club, America’s Best Inn and the many volunteers who helped with the event.
