NEWPORT – A Newport man injured when a teenager and two men allegedly came to his Shaw Street home and attacked him Wednesday evening was transported to a Pittsfield hospital by Corinna Ambulance, which was struck by a truck en route to the scene.

Sgt. Sanger Davis of the Newport Police Department said William Richards, 46, was undergoing medical tests at Sebasticook Valley Hospital after the 7 p.m. attack. Davis said Richards was beaten by a juvenile and two adult males “who had some past history with Richards,” but Davis did not provide a detailed motive.

Davis said the three suspects fled the scene and had not been located late Wednesday.

While en route to the scene of the assault, Corinna Ambulance was struck on Route 7 by a 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Richard Donaldson, 43, of Newport. Donaldson was headed north on Route 7, according to Davis, when he pulled around a vehicle that had driven to the side of the road because of the oncoming ambulance. Donaldson’s side mirror struck the ambulance’s mirror, causing it to shatter the driver’s side window.

No one was injured.

Donaldson said he was blinded by the setting sun and never saw the ambulance, despite its lights and siren.

The ambulance, operated by Delores Adams, 34, of Corinna, continued on its way to pick up Richards and transport him to Sebasticook Valley Hospital.
