Contest winners

BANGOR – Fifth-grader Joe Hayden, a pupil at All Saints Catholic School in Bangor, is a winner in Maine’s Constitution Essay and Poster Contest for 2005-06. He created a poster featuring Maine symbols. His teacher is Karen Young.

Eighth-grader Anna Carmack, also a pupil at All Saints Catholic School, wrote a winning essay on the Maine Constitution in the essay segment of the contest. Her teacher is Melanie Walden.

The annual contest promotes Maine history and emphasizes the importance of democracy. More than 640 posters and 50 essays from schools throughout Maine were submitted for consideration.

The winning pupils toured Maine’s Capitol Complex and got a rare view of the state’s original 1820 Constitution at the Maine State Archives in Augusta. In addition, they each received a $100 U.S. savings bond.

Skills USA

BANGOR – The 2006 National Skills USA Conference was held in Kansas City, Mo., June 19-23. Representing United Technologies Center in Bangor was a team of 11 students, all of whom were first-place gold medal winners at the Maine state competition held at UTC in March. One student, Tabitha Horr of Brewer High School, placed second in the food and beverage competition.

The 2006 UTC team members were: Brock Bradford, cabinetmaking, Bangor Christian Schools; Andrew Harriman welding, Bangor Christian Schools; Craig Stevens extemporaneous speaking, Bangor High School; Anthony Chase, plumbing, Bangor High School; Tabitha Horr, food and beverage service, Brewer High School; Matthew Smith, heating, Brewer High School; Christopher Wiers, automotive services, Central High School in Corinth; Michael Kaelin, power equipment technology, Central High School; Amanda Castonguay, Web design, Hampden Academy; Samuel Green III, diesel equipment, Old Town High School; and Andrienne Ricci, Web design, Bangor Christian Schools.

More than 4,700 students from all over the U.S. competed at the national level in 84 different contests. The competition is primarily paid for by contributions from postsecondary colleges and industry.

UTC has been actively involved in the skills conference since 1988. Skills adviser Wayne Jackson has for many years devoted countless hours and energy to the students who compete each year. He spearheads a fundraising drive to help pay the students’ expenses associated with the competitions.

Achievement awards

The Phi Beta Kappa Association of Maine Academic Achievement Awards for 2006 announced the names of award recipients recently. They are Luke Beland, Bangor High School; Reid McLaughlin, Brewer High School; Nathaniel Brown, Hampden Academy; Zachery Deabay, Hermon High School; Lukas Wong-Achorn, John Bapst Memorial High School; and Mike Zhang, Orono High School.

Phi Beta Kappa Academic Achievement Awards are given annually to a high school junior in each participating school, who demonstrates intellectual curiosity and academic achievement in and beyond the classroom and who plans to go on to higher education.

Bowdoin College

BRUNSWICK – The following area students graduated from Bowdoin College during commencement ceremonies May 27:

. Jesse McCree of Glenburn was awarded a bachelor’s degree in Africana studies and government and legal studies. He received high honors in Africana studies for a project titled “Spatial Distance? Social Distance: White Reactions to an Informal Settlement in Hout Bay? Cape Town? and the Politics of Exclusion in Post-Apartheid South Africa.” McCree also received the Lennox Foundation Book Prize from the Africana studies program. In his senior, junior and sophomore years he received Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowships.

. Lindsey Parsons of Hampden was awarded a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

. Hilarie Wilson of Hampden was awarded a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry.

. Michael Wood of Hampden was awarded a bachelor’s degree in English and theater, and French. He received the Abraham Goldberg Prize for the most skill in the art of designing or directing from the department of theater and dance, and the Alice Merrill Mitchell Prize for the most skill in the art of acting.

. Erin Lucey of Hermon was awarded a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in psychology.

. Kathryn Ann Ostrofsky of Veazie was awarded a bachelor’s degree in history. She received honors in history for a project titled “Everyone’s ‘Black Swan’: Elizabeth Greenfield and the Debate over Black Uplift in the Antebellum North.” She also received the Sherman David Spector of the Class of 1950 Award in history from the department of history, and a Nyhus Travel Grant for the study of history.

in visual arts.

Clark University

WORCESTER, Mass. – These local students graduated recently from Clark University:

. Alexandra Kelly of Bangor, a graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She was a member of Fiat Lux and Lambda Pi Eta, a national communication honor society. She was the winner of the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from the communication and culture program.

. Hilary Ohmart of Brewer, a graduate of Brewer High School, received a bachelor’s degree in communication and culture.

KINGSTON, R.I. – Zachary Canders of Bangor graduated from the University of Rhode Island during commencement ceremonies on May 21. He received a degree in biomedical engineering and a degree in electrical engineering. He has been employed by National Grid and will begin work in July.
