Veazie girl wins design contest

VEAZIE – This fall, as the Maine winner of the Garelick Farms Milk Masterpiece Carton Design Contest, Kess Doughty of Veazie, a second-grader from Penobscot Christian School in Bangor, will get to know what it feels like to have her artwork on milk cartons in schools and homes throughout New England.

Earlier this year, in honor of its 75th anniversary, Garelick Farms, invited young artists to design commemorative milk cartons that depict “What Family Means to Me.” The design contest was open to students in kindergarten through sixth grade in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and the Albany, N.Y., region. One winner was selected in each state.

“Working on the design was fun,” Kess said. “I’m really surprised that I won.”

Kess’s winning design illustrates that her family works together like tools. She described her family as “bright in ideas.”

In addition to having her artwork featured on Garelick Farms cartons this fall, Kess received a year’s worth of Garelick Farms milk for her family. Kess’s art teacher received $500 to use toward art supplies, a family craft night or another school-related expense.
