New Regis Philbin show proves ‘America’s Got Talent’

As I’ve said before, there are those who have what it takes and should keep auditioning until they make it big, while others should realize they just aren’t funny, they can’t sing and they can’t dance.

When I was little, I used to dream of singing and dancing on the stage filled with stars as I watched Ed McMahon host “Star Search.”

Now, I still dream of McMahon showing up at my front door with a gigantic multi-million dollar check, but I’ve found a new outlet for my notions of stardom.

Reality TV has the power to make nobodies famous overnight, and “America’s Got Talent” on NBC is searching for that special performance that will knock our socks off in a fashion similar to that of “Star Search.”

Regis Philbin is the McMahon of the show that’s produced by Simon Cowell & FremantleMedia. In true Cowell “American Idol” spirit, judges David Hasslehoff, pop star Brandy and Piers Morgan have the power of the buzzer and the vote if they don’t like what they see.

And it’s not all singing and dancing. There are comedy routines, magic acts, balancing and sword acts, even a striptease (which I agree with Brandy was a bit over the top).

I’m not exactly sure what The Man on the Couch thought, but I do know he enjoyed the rappin’ grandma.

As for me, it’s not my favorite reality show of all time, but something does happen when a performer who has it all gets up and does their thing with confidence and pride.

For me, that was 11-year-old Bianca who sang “And I am Telling You” with a voice much larger than one would expect. It filled the stage, poured out of the television and came into my living room like nothing I’ve ever heard.

You can see a highlight of her performance at www.NBC.com by going to the show’s site and clicking on recaps.

While the horrible entertainers do add some comic relief to the show, I’m sure I’ll keep watching NBC on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. to see who the judges find to be truly talented.

After all, this is America, where anything is possible.
