Washington County

Last year Gov. Baldacci asked David Flanagan to form a committee to come up with observations and recommendations on how to help Washington County’s economy. The Washington County report came back with many recommendations including a proposed pilot project that positions Washington County as an attractive retirement destination for seniors 60 or 65 years of age.

This would be done by the elimination of the state income tax for retired residents in Washington County. This could bring large numbers of retirees to our area. These new residents would not require additional schools for their children, hospitals would benefit, almost all local stores and services would do well.

I wrote to the governor April 28 and again on May 22 and asked if his office would be doing anything to help implement any of the recommendations in Flanagan’s Washington County report. As of July I have had no response from the Governors Office.

Robbinston
