BANGOR – Less than a week after the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department took delivery of seven new cruisers, one has been vandalized, the department reported Friday.

Chief Deputy Troy Morton said the passenger side doors of one of the cruisers received $1,700 in damage early Wednesday morning.

“There is a tremendous amount of damage to the passenger front and rear doors,” Morton said.

The cruiser, which is the second to be damaged in the parking lot in less than a month, was the only new one left in the lot. The other six were sent out to have radios and lights installed, Morton said by telephone.

An investigation is under way. Morton said the department is looking at videotape footage to see who and what caused the damage.

Morton was unsure whether vandals kicked or used an object to cause the damage.

There are no leads and no suspects at this time, the chief deputy said.

It is the second time in a month that a sheriff’s cruiser has been vandalized, although Morton doesn’t think the incidents are related because of the varying types of damage done to the vehicles.
